A federal bankruptcy judge has denied a motion to proceed with victims’ settlements related to clergy abuse within the Diocese of Camden.

The diocese, in April 2022, agreed to pay $87.5 million to settle claims for roughly 300 victims of clergy sexual abuse. The money was slated to go to a trust fund set up over a four-year period from the diocese and related Catholic entities. The settlement also included maintaining or enhancing protocols to protect children.

However, Judge Jerrold Poslusny, Jr. said the court needs to hear more on the merits of the settlement reached between the diocese and a committee representing victims.

The judge also denied a motion from insurance companies to enforce a previous settlement with the church, saying it was intended to be part of a plan which ultimately never came to a vote and wasn’t approved by victims.

In a statement, the diocese said it will work with the victims committee to immediately submit a revised plan for the court’s consideration and that it fully intends to treat victims fairly and equitably. “The Diocese continues to fulfill its mission every day, including continuing support for the survivors of abuse,” said Bishop Dennis Sullivan.
