Dear Friends in Christ:
Last December I shared with you my decision to file a Chapter 11 petition with the United States Bankruptcy Court on behalf of the administrative offices of the Diocese of Sacramento. I will file that petition on Monday, April 1, 2024.
As I shared in the December announcement, the bankruptcy process is the only respectful, and equitable way to address the substantial number of claims by those who have been abused by clergy and other Church Workers. Bankruptcy is a lengthy process, but it provides supervision and transparency for all the parties involved so that an equitable resolution is offered to the victim-survivors of abuse. The court-supervised reorganization will also allow me to sustain the sanctifying, teaching, and charitable work of the Catholic community in Northern California.
The Diocese is creating an easily accessible Chapter 11 Bankruptcy page on its website. On this page you will find all communications from the diocese pertaining to bankruptcy, the latest FAQs, as well as all court filings and documentation.
As this journey of atonement continues, join me in prayer for all the victim-survivors of abuse. May the Lord of mercies also renew us in our commitment to be the disciples of Jesus. Only by God’s grace will we emerge from this penitential exercise with greater resolve to be a humble sanctuary of holiness and healing for all the sons and daughters of God in Northern California.

Apreciados Amigos en Cristo:
El diciembre pasado compartí con ustedes mi decisión de presentar una solicitud para el Amparo Jurídico del Capítulo 11 ante el Tribunal de Bancarrotas de los Estados Unidos en nombre de las oficinas administrativas de la Diócesis de Sacramento. Presentaré esa solicitud el lunes 1 de abril de 2024.
Como les compartí en el anuncio de diciembre, el proceso de bancarrota es la única manera respetuosa y equitativa de responder al número considerable de reclamaciones de personas que han sido abusadas por el clero u otro personal de la Iglesia. La bancarrota es un proceso largo, pero proporciona supervisión y transparencia a todas las personas involucradas para que se ofrezca una resolución equitativa a las víctimas-sobrevivientes del abuso. El proceso de reorganización supervisado por la corte también me permitirá continuar la labor santificadora, catequética y caritativa de la comunidad católica en el norte de California.
Mi oficina está creando una página fácilmente accesible sobre el procedimiento de Bancarrota en el sitio web diocesano. En esta página encontrará todas las comunicaciones diocesanas relacionadas con la bancarrota, las respuestas más actualizadas para sus preguntas, así como todas los expedientes judiciales y documentación.
