The FIFA Men’s World Cup could lead to a rise in human trafficking and sexual exploitation, according to the Catholic Church in Mexico.
More than five million visitors are expected to visit the country as three cities host matches. The tournament is being played across Mexico, the United States and Canada.
The Archdiocese of Mexico has released a statement warning that “risks may increase” regarding “human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and other forms of violence”, with particular concern for women and children.
While sporting events “present an opportunity for encounter, togetherness, fraternity, and cultural exchange”, they can be abused by “criminal networks that operate through deception, manipulation, coercion, exploitation, and the abuse of individuals”, the statement said.
The Archdiocese has called on authorities to “strengthen prevention, early detection, responsible reporting, and the protection of potential victims during this period”.
Christians have been encouraged to raise awareness of the issue and “speak clearly about this crime within pastoral settings”, with leaders urged to inform parents and “promote a culture of caring” within youth groups.
The United Nations has warned that the influx of visitors and travel between cities can increase the risk of people smuggling for sexual and labour exploitation. Criminals are known to recruit victims online, giving false promises of work and settled immigration status to citizens of other Latin American nations.
Up to 96% of human trafficking cases go unreported in Mexico, according to its Citizen Council for Security and Justice, with women and children aged between 13 and 17 being the main targets.
The Archdiocese has also suggested “moments of prayer for victims of trafficking, exploitation, abuse, and violence”.
The tournament kicks off on 11 June, when Mexico play South Africa.
