A street sign in downtown Toledo dedicated to Monsignor Jerome Schmit has been removed after city council approved the recommendation from the Toledo Board of Honor.
The request to remove the sign stems from a decades-old murder. In 2006, Father Gerald Robinson was convicted of killing Sister Margaret Ann Pahl 26 years earlier.
Questions arose over whether Schmit obstructed the murder investigation by allegedly interrupting an interrogation of Robinson.
Family members had been working for decades to have the sign removed.
“Taking that sign down is a significant step in healing for our community, for the Pahl family, and for all clergy sexual abuse victims and violent crime victims at large,” said Claudia Vercellotti, founder of Ohio SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests).
Schmit died before the trial.
