It happened with little fanfare. But a single lawsuit recently transferred from Alameda County to Sonoma County Superior Court represents an important moment for hundreds of people from California’s North Coast who came forward in recent years with claims they were sexually abused by Catholic clergy.
It also carries major ramifications for the financial standing of the church’s Santa Rosa Diocese, which stretches from San Pablo Bay to the Oregon border.
Known as a bellwether case, the lawsuit is meant to serve as a guidepost for the roughly 260 claims filed against the diocese after the state of California opened a three-year litigation window through 2019 legislation for people whose allegations fell outside the statute of limitations.
