Carlos Ramos coached in a North Texas youth football league before his August arrest.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly named a church at which the accused allegedly volunteered. The identity of the church has yet to be independently confirmed by Chron or police.

A former assistant coach in a Texas youth football league and volunteer church youth leader has been arrested on charges of sexual abuse of a child

On Tuesday morning, the Grapevine Police Department (GPD) announced that Carlos Ernesto Ramos, 39, had been brought in on Aug. 26 in connection with an alleged continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14 that occurred in 2023. Detectives are investigating whether there may be additional victims.

According to the police department’s statement, Ramos coached for an unspecified youth football league in North Texas from 2022 to 2024. Police also alleged Ramos volunteered as a youth leader at an unnamed church in Grapevine from 2020 to 2023.

The department said it will not release further information about the current investigation because of the case’s sensitive nature and the victim’s age. However, Grapevine Police are asking families to come forward if a child shares details about any alleged inappropriate conduct involving Ramos.

“We recognize that coming forward in circumstances involving a child can be difficult,” the statement from GPD reads. “Parents or guardians whose child has made a disclosure, or who have specific information indicating their child may have experienced inappropriate conduct involving Ramos, are encouraged to contact our detectives.”

Important questions remain, including which youth football organization Ramos participated in and whether the accused has a history of similar issues that would show up in a background check.

Ramos is currently being held in the Tarrant County Jail with a bond set at $500,000 while the investigation continues. His next court date is set for Nov. 20, according to court records.
