The former senior pastor of Calvary Chapel Montrose was arrested in connection with a case involving child sexual abuse, the church announced.
Benjamin Garate is no longer employed by the church and was removed from all pastoral duties and leadership responsibilities, Calvary Chapel Montrose posted on social media.
According to court records, Garate has two hearings on Thursday afternoon. He is accused of several sex charges and child abuse. His bond was set at $60,000.
“We condemn sexual abuse in every form. We have zero tolerance for sexual abuse, exploitation, or the misuse of spiritual authority. Such conduct is fundamentally contrary to our Christian beliefs and our responsibility to protect the vulnerable,” the church stated.
Calvary Chapel stated it supports a thorough investigation and is cooperating with law enforcement.
The board is currently overseeing church operations and finances, while Pastor John Krabill will continue to serve as lead pastor.
“We recognize the grief and serious questions this news brings to our congregation and community. We ask that the victim and the victim’s family be treated with compassion and that their privacy be respected during this deeply painful time,” the church stated.
