Remigio Rios, 56, was arrested on a warrant involving sexual abuse of a child under 14. The school said he is no longer employed there.
A former faculty member and coach at St. John Paul II Academy has been arrested on charges involving sexual abuse of a child, prompting school officials to notify parents and families.
According to a Nueces County Sheriff’s Office arrest report obtained by 3NEWS, 56-year-old Remigio Rios was taken into custody on Oct. 14 in connection with a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14.
The arrest report states Rios was picked up at the Hidalgo County Jail and transported to the Nueces County Jail on an outstanding warrant.
The Nueces County Sheriff’s Office also lists an indecency with a child by exposure charge and a $1 million bond for the sexual abuse charge.
In a message to parents, the academy said Rios worked there last quarter but is no longer employed. School officials also addressed concerns about whether any students were involved.
“At this time, we are not aware of any connections to the Academy’s students,” the school said. The academy emphasized that student safety remains its top priority and said school counselors are available to support students and families.
The arrest report does not provide details about when or where the alleged abuse occurred, the relationship between Rios and the alleged victim, or whether the allegations involve more than one child.
3NEWS is working to obtain additional court documents and information about the allegations.
