Ottawa police have charged Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) teacher Nancy Lescarbeau with sexually assaulting a student earlier this decade, among other alleged crimes.

Police said Wednesday morning the eight charges against Lescarbeau, 52, date back to 2021 and 2022.

They include sexual assault, forcible confinement, intimidation by threats of violence, assault with a weapon and sexual interference, which is a charge involving children under age 16.

Lescarbeau was arrested and charged on Wednesday, police confirmed in an email to CBC News. They began investigating allegations last month.

Police said they are concerned there could be other victims and ask people with information to reach out to their Sexual Assault and Child Abuse unit or Crime Stoppers.

Teacher ‘immediately removed from the classroom’

In an emailed statement to CBC News on Wednesday, the OCSB wrote that it’s aware of the charges against Lescarbeau and that she was “immediately removed from the classroom” once it learned about “the situation” from Ottawa police.

The board did not say when that happened.

“As this is an active police matter, we are limited in what we can share and will not comment on individual employment information beyond what the Ottawa police have publicly released,” the board stated.

CBC News has asked the board what school Lescarbeau taught at. Police have declined to specify that, referring the question to the board.

The OCSB added that the safety and well-being of its students is its priority, and that it knows the news “will concern students, families and staff.”

“We are fully cooperating with the Ottawa police investigation and will provide support to anyone in our school community who needs it,” the board wrote.

Lescarbeau was scheduled to make her first court appearance on Wednesday.
