Fr. Raymond Barton

Ordained: 1966
Status: Accused

Diocese: Diocese of Richmond VA

Monsignor. Retired in 2011. The diocese announced in 2/14/20 that it had received an allegation that Barton sexually abused a child in the early-1970s. Suspended from active ministry pending investigation. The Diocesan Review Board presented its findings to Bishop Knestout, who determined that the allegation was credible, but could not be substantiated because the accuser was deceased and Barton could not be interviewed due to “health conditions.” Therefore, Barton’s name would not be added to the diocese’s list of those with credible and substantiated allegations.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
