Fr. Sylvester F. Brown
Following a recent court order, on 12/16/2013 Bishop Quinn released a list of 13 names of priests who had credible allegations against them of abuse involving minors. Brown’s inclusion on this list is the first public notice that he had been accused of abuse. The list updated 6/23/2014 shows that there were at least two allegations against him known by Diocese as early as 1985. He asked a minor male and an adult male to expose genitals under the pretext of checking their development. Similar allegations were made in 1992, 2003 and 2013 of abuse 1963-1971. Added to the Stockton diocese’s list in 11/20, where he had faculties 10/1/2008-10/6/2008. Brown died 1/6/2010.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
