Fr. John William Curran
Accused anonymously in 1990 and 1991 of abuse 18 to 30 years prior. Removed in 2/1993 after an internal investigation. Parishioners were told that he had taken “a sabbatical.” Accused in 8/1994 of abuse 1986-1990 of two boys, who were students at Chicago’s Quigley South Seminary. Sued. In 11/1994 the Archdiocese told parishioners the truth; by then the statute of limitations had expired for the plaintiffs. Curran died in 3/2000. At least one claim was included in a 10/2005 settlement by the Archdiocese. Name included on the Archdiocese’s list in 2006, allegations substantiated. Named in two 4/2012 civil suits by two men who alleged abuse in 1987. Personnel file released in 1/2014. Included in the 5/23/2023 IL Attorney General’s Report, which notes 40 “reported survivors,” of abuse 1949-early 1980s.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
