Fr. Thomas (William) Gillespie

A lawsuit filed in 2002 against two other priests (Moorse and Tarlton) included an allegation that Gillespie sexually abused a boy at St. John’s Abbey in 1977-1978. He was living at the time under restrictions at the Abbey. Per a 7/13/2008 posting on Behind the Pine Curtain, four former students had accused him of abuse between 1977-1987. Gillespie’s name was not included on the 12/05/2013 St. Paul-Minneapolis archdiocese’s list, but it was one of 17 priests listed on a, 8/2002 memo to Archbishop Flynn regarding priests with known abuse histories. Included on the list released by St. John’s Abbey 12/9/2013, by the St. Cloud diocese’s 1/3/2014 list, and on St Paul-Minneapolis’ revised list 2/17/2014. Gillespie’s St. Paul-Minneapolis personnel file was released 5/19/2014.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
