Diocese: Archdiocese of Philadelphia PA

Accused along with Rev. Charles Newman of sexually abusing a teenage boy in the mid-1990s. Newman was principal of Archbishop Ryan High School and Howitz was a maintenance worker at the school. Newman allegedly plied the boy with drugs and alcohol. Allegations against both men were reportedly deemed credible by the Archdiocese and Franciscans. Ordered to live a life of prayer and penance. The boy died of a drug overdose at age 28 in 2006. Included on the Our Lady of Guadalupe Franciscans’ list of credibly accused as of 1/2024. (Howitz was a member of the Assumption Province.)

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
