Fr. Alan D. Jupin

Ordained: 1962
Status: Sued

Died: 1/27/2019
Diocese: Diocese of Albany NY

Parish priest, police chaplain. Accused in 2003 of raping a 16-year-old boy in the mid-1970s and sharing him with 3 priests (Douglas, Ophals, Cawlings). Accused in a 5/2003 lawsuit of intimidating his accuser; the D.A. investigated. The same man filed suit in 8/2003, claiming the Diocese slandered him. In 6/2003 another man came forward to allege that Jupin sexually abused him as a boy in the 1970s. The suits filed by the first alleged victim to come forward were dismissed 1/30/2004. Jupin was reinstated when the diocese’s review board found no “reasonable grounds” for believing the two charges. In Fall 2010 a man alleged Jupin sexually abused him beginning when he was age 9 in the 1980s. He said he was also abused by Revs. Donald Ophals, John Bertolucci, Louis Douglas and Carl Urban. Jupin was placed on leave in 3/2011, then reinstated in 11/2011. He died 1/27/2019. Another lawsuit was filed in 8/2019. His name was added in 7/2020 to the Diocese’s list of credibly accused after allegations in 2019 were determined by the diocese to have “reasonable cause.” Accused in a lawsuit filed in 7/2021 under the NY Child Victims Act of sexually abusing a boy, age 9, in 1965. This was at least the 11th such suit filed since 2019.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
