Fr. Daniel J. Maher
From Ireland, where he was ordained in 1962. Arrived in the Albany diocese shortly after ordination. Parish priest, high school teacher, hospital chaplain, police chaplain. Accused in a 9/2005 lawsuit of raping a 12-year-old altar boy twice in 1973. Maher was assigned to St. Francis de Sales Parish in West Albany during the time in question. He denied the allegations. A diocesan investigation determined there was “no reasonable grounds” and Maher was returned to ministry the same month. The plaintiff’s attorney said in 9/2005 that a second victim had come forward. Maher was still in active ministry in 2007. He retired in 2008. He was placed on leave in 2/2020 due to new allegations of the sexual abuse of a minor in the 1960s and 1970s. The alleged victim had come forward in 4/2018. Accused in a 9/2020 lawsuit, along with Fr. Donald Starks, of sexually abusing an altar boy, ages 11-13, in 1966-1968. Added in 2020 to the Diocese’s list of credibly accused. Maher died 12/31/2020.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
