Fr. Joseph T. Mundy

Ordained: 1981
Status: Accused

Diocese: Diocese of Rockville Centre NY

A religious educator suspected during a church retreat in 1994 that a 14-year-old former altar boy was being groomed for sex by Mundy. She reported the matter to Msgr. Alan Placa (later accused of abuse himself). The boy’s mother and parish were protective of the priest, so the boy didn’t disclose until 2002, when he was age 21, that Mundy sexually abused him. In one incident, he said that when he was 14, Mundy took him to a gay nightclub, plied him with alcohol and pressured him to have sex. Mundy would take the boy on ski trips to concerts, and Broadway shows. The boy slept over in the rectory every Saturday night. The alleged victim claimed that Mundy also abused his close friend. Mundy refused to go for treatment to St. Luke’s but did agree to private counseling on Long Island. He eventually left the priesthood. He was identified as Priest A in the 2003 Grand Jury Report. Included in 3/21 on the diocese’s list of accused.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
