Fr. John P. Nickas

Ordained: 1966
Status: Settled

Died: 10/9/2008
Diocese: Archdiocese of Newark NJ

Died 10/09/2008. A $75K settlement involving claims against Nickas was announced 5/15/2013. He was accused of sexually abusing of a boy on several occasions 1970-1972, at St. Rocco’s in Newark. He was also accused of giving the boy alcohol. A second man alleged that he was molested as a child by Nickas while staying at a Newark homeless shelter founded by Nickas. The Archdiocesan Review Board deemed both allegations not credible. After the first settlement, an attorney asked that this man’s claims be re-investigated. Included 2/13/2019 on the Archdiocese’s list of credibly accused.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
