Diocese: Diocese of Syracuse NY

Two men came forward in 2002 to allege that they were abused by Proud in the early 1970s. Sent to St. Luke’s Institute for treatment after the first allegation was received in Spring 2002. Diocese admitted at least one man’s allegations were credible and the man was given a face-to-face meeting with Proud at St. Luke’s. Too late for criminal charges under SOL. Proud was permanently removed from ministry in 6/03. On diocese’s list 12/3/18. Named in a lawsuit filed in 2019 or 2020 under the NY Child Victims Act.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
