Fr. Joseph A. Reade
Named as accused in the CO A.G.’s report released 10/23/19. Diocese received a report in 1994 that Reade sexually abused a boy, ages 10-12, 1969-71, while assigned as chaplain to two Grand Junction hospitals. Diocese settled with the alleged victim, who told investigators there may have been other victims. In 2016 the diocese reported to Pueblo police an allegation of abuse by Reade in the mid-1950s. In 1986 a psychiatrist informed the diocese of a recent allegation that Reade kissed and fondled an 11-year-old boy at a social gathering. Reade was suspended, then reinstated after the allegation was deemed unsubstantiated. Reade denied the allegation. He died in 1990.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
