Rev. Joseph E. Vatter
Accused publicly in 9/2022 of sexually abusing a boy, age 9, at St. Christopher’s in Tonawanda in 1980. The diocese received a report of abuse in 2004, likely from the boy’s parents, but determined that there was “no basis” to the allegation. Vatter retired in 5/2022. In 2/2023 he was placed on leave due to an allegation that he sexually abused a girl. Deemed substantiated by the Diocese in 9/2023. No criminal charges due to the statute of limitations.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
