Diocese: Diocese of Springfield MA

A man filed a civil suit in 2/04 alleging that he was sexually abused by Welch (spelled Walsh) for three years in the early 1950s, when Welch was in charge of St. Michael’s High School. Welch, who died in 1986, was editor of the Diocese’s newspaper and executor of Bishop Weldon’s estate. Conflict in 2003-2004 that Welch, as executor, may have destroyed Diocesan personnel files relating to abuse accusations within the Diocese. One claim settled in 8/04 and two in 2008.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
