Accused Priests Who Worked
in the Archdiocese of Chicago

BishopAccountability.org has examined the public record to identify Chicago priests who have been accused of sexually abusing minors. Our list of 85 priests is considerably longer than the list of 55 priests that Cardinal George (photo at left) released recently. We also provide extensive information on many priests, including full assignment records and links to additional information. We will be supplementing that information in the coming weeks and searching for other accused Chicago priests. Please email us with suggestions and corrections to this work in progress. Last revised 3/24/07.

Baranowski was first identified as an accused priest in the Chicago archdiocese's 3/20/06 announcement. No details of the accusation(s) were given. Baranowski consistently held the bottom assignment at the Polish parishes where he worked, with no advancement over the years. He is listed as on sick leave in the 1976-77 Directories, although the 3/20/06 announcement states that he resigned in 1975.

In 1987 Bartz was accused of abusing several minor males and was moved from his faculty position at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary to a hospital chaplaincy and to a residence position in a parish with a 286-student elementary school. At least one of the alleged molestations took place at the seminary. In 1992, Pat Navin wrote to the archdiocese, alleging that Bartz had abused him in 1976, when he was age 18, on a Wisconsin ski trip. At the time of the alleged abuse, Bartz was associate pastor at Ascension church in Oak Park. Cardinal Bernardin wrote to Navin in 8/92, apologizing but saying that Bartz would remain in ministry because he was not a risk to young people. In the next Directory (1993), Bartz's residency at St. Eulalia's parish was no longer listed. USA Today states that a second boy was allegedly abused by Bartz in the 1970s.

vice-president 1981-82;
president 1982-83.
- Died 10/22/89 (called Norber C. Becker in the 1990 Directory's necrology entries)

Becker is accused of abusing a boy during the time that the priest was the second-ranking canon lawyer in the archdiocese and an officer of the Canon Law Society of America. The boy was allegedly pimped to Becker by Rev. Kenneth C. Ruge, who had abused the boy first. This was allegedly an arrangement that the priests used to abuse other boys. Attorney Marc Pearlman states that he knows of 10 victims of the two priests, and that all but one were victimized by both Ruge and Becker.

4 Bennett, Joseph R.

- St. Christina's in Chicago (1978-80) parish school had 679 children map
- St. John de la Salle in Chicago (pastor 1980-89) parish school had 309 children map

- Removed from Holy Ghost parish in 2/06
In late 2003, a woman told the diocese that Bennett had had intercourse with her for three years, beginning when she was 8 years old. The girl was in public school, and Bennett would allegedly abuse her after catechism sessions. In 2004, another woman came forward, alleging similar abuse when she was 12 years old, also at St. John de la Salle. Instead of removing Bennett in 2003 or 2004, Cardinal George says he had him "monitored" while the Review Board investigated. But in the 2003-2005 Directories, Bennett is listed as the sole priest in the Holy Ghost rectory. The pastor emeritus had moved out in 2002. George removed Bennett in 2/06, after bad publicity over his allowing Daniel McCormack to remain in ministry despite allegations.
- Priest Accused in '03 Is Removed, by Cathleen Falsani and Art Golab, Chicago Sun-Times (2/2/06)
- Letter to Cardinal George, by David Clohessy and Barbara Blaine (2/13/06)

Comments on the Assignment Record: Bennett spent only 2 years at Our Lady of the Ridge (1974-76) and was then put in residence at St. Joseph and St. Anne while he was chaplain at the Cook County Jail (1976-78). The chaplaincy was not stated outright in the Directory, but was included in Bennett's parish entry. This career detour and subtle recordkeeping suggest that the assignment in Chicago Ridge had gone awry in 1976.

Bennett's beginning at St. John de la Salle was also unusual, in that he was not included in the parish list of priests until his second year at the parish.

- Died 3/28/2000. The necrologies in the 2001 Directory list Curran as retired, but he was not so listed in prior Directories.

In 1994, the archdiocese announced that two men had come forward with accusations that Curran abused them when they were minor males at St. Christina's church in the late 1980s. At the time of the announcement, Curran was on a "sabbatical," which the archdiocese now admitted was prompted by earlier abuse allegations received in the early 1990s from two other men, who claimed Curran had abused them at Quigley South minor seminary, where he taught music in the 1960s. When Curran left St. Christina's, he also vacated his position as archdiocesan dean, which he had held for over 15 years, under both Cardinal Cody and Cardinal Bernardin.
