In 1987 Bartz was accused of abusing several minor males and was moved from his faculty position at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary to a hospital chaplaincy and to a residence position in a parish with a 286-student elementary school. At least one of the alleged molestations took place at the seminary. In 1992, Pat Navin wrote to the archdiocese, alleging that Bartz had abused him in 1976, when he was age 18, on a Wisconsin ski trip. At the time of the alleged abuse, Bartz was associate pastor at Ascension church in Oak Park. Cardinal Bernardin wrote to Navin in 8/92, apologizing but saying that Bartz would remain in ministry because he was not a risk to young people. In the next Directory (1993), Bartz's residency at St. Eulalia's parish was no longer listed. USA Today states that a second boy was allegedly abused by Bartz in the 1970s.

Becker is accused of abusing a boy during the time that the priest was the second-ranking canon lawyer in the archdiocese and an officer of the Canon Law Society of America. The boy was allegedly pimped to Becker by Rev. Kenneth C. Ruge, who had abused the boy first. This was allegedly an arrangement that the priests used to abuse other boys. Despite polygraph confirmation, Review Board found 'no reasonable cause to suspect'. Alleged on 12/3/03 to have abused 2 girls in 1967-69, including rape. Board recommended removal on 10/15/05; Cardinal George kept Bennett in ministry until McCormack case broke. Removed 1/31/06; then at least 10 other allegations were received. Settlement 8/12/08 released some documents.

Comments on the Assignment Record: Bennett spent only 2 years at Our Lady of the Ridge (1974-76) and was then put in residence at St. Joseph and St. Anne while he was chaplain at the Cook County Jail (1976-78). The chaplaincy was not stated outright in the Directory, but was included in Bennett's parish entry. This career detour and subtle recordkeeping suggest that the assignment in Chicago Ridge had gone awry in 1976.

Bennett's beginning at St. John de la Salle was also unusual, in that he was not included in the parish list of priests until his second year at the parish.

When Curran left St. Christina's, he also vacated his position as archdiocesan dean, which he had held for over 15 years, under both Cardinal Cody and Cardinal Bernardin.

In the index of the 1988-90 Directories there are two entries for Huels, one for St. Philip Priory (see above) and one for CTU. But the CTU entry for those years incorrectly lists Huels's ordination year as 1980 (instead of the correct 1976) and does not provide his middle initial. In the 1991 Directory, this is fixed: one index entry correctly lists him as John M. '76, with both the St. Philip and CTU assignments. The incorrect CTU listings would have made it harder for a researcher, during Huels's early years at CTU, to find Huels's 1970s Trenton assignment, where he abused a boy. CTU had 334 students.

In June 2001, the archdiocese received an anonymous complaint that Kealy had abused a minor male at St. Germaine's in the 1970s. Kealy would later become chancellor of the archdiocese in Bernardin's reorganized administration and then judicial vicar of the Chicago province's Court of Appeal. The cardinal's review board deemed the 2001 accusation unsubstantiated. The archdiocese states that Kealy had been transferred from Immaculate Conception in Highland Park to Sts. Faith, Hope and Charity in Winnetka two weeks before they received the June 2001 accusation. Kealy's position of judicial vicar of the Chicago province's Court of Appeal was apparently ended in 2001. Then in March 2002, the anonymous informant shed his anonymity and provided additional details that warranted Kealy's removal from his position of pastor in Winnetka.

- Died 6/15/90

- 24 Victims of Priests Settle: 5 Alleged Abusers Identified for 1st Time, by Manya A. Brachear, Chicago Tribune (10/28/05)

Comment on Assignment Record: Kelly's one-year assignment at St. Therese of the Infant Jesus (1972-73) suggests that the archdiocese knew at the time of misconduct at the parish and transferred Kelly for this reason. Thirty years later, the archdiocese settled a claim of abuse by Kelly at the parish. His brief assignment at St. Kieran's (1979-81) might indicate trouble there as well.

35 Keough, John Joseph "Jack"
- Ordained 5/1/52

- O’Hare International Airport (chaplain 1966-1982), according to article at www.catholicnewworld.com [link to attached article?]. However, 1967-68 Directories include no references to archdiocese’s airport chaplaincy, which reportedly was just beginning; Keough is listed only as being in residence at Our Lady of Hope (see next entry).
- Our Lady of Hope in Des Plaines IL (1966-68) parish school had 345 children map – note that this is different from the previous Our Lady of Hope address, above. Rectory was apparently relocated in 1965 or so.

- Not indexed in 1992-95 Directories
- Resigned 1/93, according to 3/20/06 archdiocesan announcement.

- 15 Cases of Priest Abuse Settled, by Mickey Ciokajlo (10/3/03)
- Archdiocesan Priests with Substantiated Allegations, by Chicago archdiocese (3/20/06)

Comment on Assignment Record: Kissane was not listed in the 1987 Directory, and then in the following year he is "in residence" at a new parish. These listings suggest that there was misconduct at St. Adrian's, his previous parish, and perhaps that Kissane spent some time in 1986-87 in treatment. Kissane disappears from the Directory at the time that Cardinal Bernardin was removing accused priests.

- Mayer is not indexed in the 1991 Directory
- St. Odilo's in Berwyn (pastor, late 1990-7/91) parish school had 311 students
- Absent on sick leave in 1992-94 Directories; in the 1993 Directory, a phone number is provided for Mayer, 217-324-4192, apparently in the Springfield IL diocese, where Daniel L. Ryan was the bishop (see also Braun, Burns, Cloutier, and Ruge)
- St. Luke's Institute (patient)
- Not indexed in Directories 1995-2003
- Resigned 1/94, according to 3/20/06 archdiocesan announcement.
Mayer was accused, in a suit filed on 12/22/83 by Jeanne Miller, of exposing himself in 1982 to several St. Edna's parish altar boys during a Fox Lake outing and trying to undress and fondle two of the boys, one of them Miller's 13-year-old son. There had apparently been previous complaints. Bernardin refused to remove Mayer and put up a legal fight. The case was settled in 1985 for $15K (not enough to cover court costs) and a meeting with Bernardin. Miller went on to found Victims of Clergy Abuse Linkup (VOCAL), which became The Linkup. Miller alleges that two other Mayer victims known to her have committed suicide. The Miller accusation and settlement were kept secret while Mayer was transferred through three parishes. The archdiocese received other allegations during those assignments, and ordered Mayer not to be alone with anyone younger than 21. But on 7/1/91 Mayer was removed from St. Odilo's in Berwyn for fraternizing with parish boys and alleged sexual misconduct with a 20-year-old male. Parishioners believed the "personal reasons" cover story until meetings held at the parish school in 10/91. A female victim came forward during those meetings, and Mayer was indicted (12/4/91) on four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse for sexually touching the 13-year-old girl when she came to the rectory for tutoring. Mayer was convicted (12/11/92), and sentenced (2/5/93) to 3 years in jail. The sentence was affirmed (9/30/94) on appeal.

42 McCaffrey, Vincent E.
- Ordained 5/10/78
- Note: Abuse at the bolded parishes is known to be alleged.
- Our Lady Help of Christians in Chicago (deacon) map
- St. Victor's in Calumet City (1978-79) not indexed in 1979 Directory and not listed in this parish, but testimony and statements by pastor Leo T. Mahon place McCaffrey here; Mahon claims that he asked McCaffrey to leave after he admitted in 1982 to abusing two boys, but the 1980 Directory and a 1980 history of the archdiocese place McCaffrey already at Our Lady of Loretto by 1979 or early 1980 (see next entry); St. Victor's parish school had 601 children map
- Our Lady of Loretto in Hometown (associate 1979-81) called Vincent E. McCarthy in 1980 Directory; corrected in 1981 Directory; parish school had 215 children map
- Resurrection Hospital in Chicago (1980)
- Guest House in Rochester MN (3 months in 1980)
- St. Joseph the Worker in Wheeling (1981-87) abuse by another priest and the school principal is alleged while McCaffrey was assigned here; parish school had 160 children map

- St. Josaphat in Chicago (1987-mid 1989) parish school had 106 children map
- Our Lady of Good Counsel in Chicago (mid 1989-11/91) parish school had 216 children
- Resigned 12/93, according to 3/20/06 archdiocesan announcement.

Comment on the Assignment Record: Media coverage of McCaffrey's career reveals the St. Victor's assignment, which is not listed in the Directory. But the Directory and an archdiocesan history document the Our Lady of Loretto assignment, which is rarely mentioned in the media. According to the latter source, McCaffrey was at Our Lady of Loretto by 3/1/80, yet Rev. Leo T. Mahon, pastor of St. Victor's, states that McCaffrey was asked to leave that parish in 1982. Many assignment descriptions in the media accounts appear to be inaccurate. Our reconstruction is tentative.
McCaffrey admitted in 2002 that he abused 12 or 14 minor males during his time as an active priest. He is now serving a 20-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to a charge of possessing and obtaining child pornography. Prosecutors estimate McCaffrey had 50 victims and a plaintiffs' attorney estimates 100. Prosecutors estimate 1,000 abuse incidents. One boy whom McCaffrey admits to abusing has stated that he was abused over 200 times. Victims allege physical threats, sadistic sex, and genital sexual intercourse. McCaffrey denies these claims. McCaffrey molested boys at rectories and at a cabin in Twin Lakes WI that he owned with 4 other priests. The archdiocese claimed to have learned of McCaffrey's abuse in 1987 (he was removed by Cardinal Bernardin in 1991). But during his hearing, McCaffrey testified that he was hospitalized for his abusive behavior in 1980 at the direction of the archdiocese. The archdiocese settled one claim for $1.9 million in 2003 and settled with 4 other victims for $4 million. Reports often describe McCaffrey as an "ex-priest" or "former priest," but as of 6/02, he had not yet been defrocked.

Note: The Official Catholic Directory aims to report the whereabouts of Catholic priests in the United States on January 1 of the Directory's publication year. Our working assumption is that a priest listed in the Directory for a given year was at the same assignment for part of the previous year as well. However, Kenedy & Sons will sometimes accept updates well into the year of publication. Diocesan clergy records are rarely available to correct this information. The Directory is also sometimes misleading or wrong. We have tried to create an accurate assignment record, given the source materials and their limitations. Wherever possible, we have used news articles to supplement the Directory record and have noted any discrepancies. Assignment records are a work in progress and we are always improving the records that we post. Please email us with new information and corrections.

Parish school enrollments are for the first year of a priest's assignment in a parish, as listed in the Directory. Mapquest coordinates are from the 2006 Chicago archdiocesan Web site, if the parish is still in the same location. If the parish was in a different location at the time in question, or has moved, we use the church's address or the priest's residence as provided in the Directory for the year in question.

Sometimes a priest works at several assignments simultaneously. The Directory's index will usually specify the parish assignment, but often not the others. Please email us if you notice that we have missed one of those un-indexed assignments.

We make no representation regarding the truth of the allegations we report. This table consolidates reports of allegations made in the media or contained in publicly available legal documents. We remind our readers that in the U.S. judicial system, a person is considered innocent until proven guilty.
