Diocese: Diocese of Grand Rapids MI

Ordained for the Diocese of Grand Rapids, incardinated into the Diocese of Saginaw in 1971. Accused in 1992 of molesting an Ionia altar boy in 1958. In 11/2005 Bur was permanently removed from ministry and given a life of prayer and penance. Additional allegations of old abuse were made public in 3/2008. Included in the MI Attorney General’s 12/15/2025 Diocese of Grand Rapids Report. Per the report, Bur was accused in 5/2006 of sexually abusing a boy, age 13, and another boy during a road trip in 1967. In 2007 one of the accusers said Bur also sexually abused his cousin. In late 2006 another man told the Diocese that Bur sexually abused him beginning when he was 11 in the late 1950s. He said he was also sexually abused by then-teenage seminarian Richard Lawie at age 14 or 15. In 10/2007 a man alleged Bur sexually abused him beginning when he was age 12 or 13 in 1957 or 1958 in Ionia. The man said he knew of four other people abused by Bur and that all of them became alcoholics. Bur died 2/1/2009.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
