Placed on leave in 1/10 pending federal investigation of charges that he violated internet child pornography laws. Investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 12/10. Investigation was dropped and Dempsey was not charged. Matter referred to the Vatican. Restored to senior priest status, allowed limited ministry. Died 3/10/17.
