Fr. Peter Edward Garcia
Monsignor. Archdiocesan Secretary for Hispanic Affairs. On leave 1984-2006. Laicized 1/3/2006. Died 7/29/2009. The Archdiocese knew of past abuse by at least 1988. Sued in 2003. Accused of abusing at least 12 minors 1961-1983. Included in the L.A. Archdiocesan Report in 2004. At least one claim settled as part of 2007 $660M settlement with 508 plaintiffs. Personnel files released in 1/2013 reveal that Garcia often targeted boys who were illegal immigrants, and would threaten to have them deported if they told. He admitted to having abused boys since ordination. Received treatment in NM in the mid-1980s, where he also worked. Included on the Santa Fe archdiocese’s list of credibly accused in 5/2021.
