Fr. Richard E. Johnson

Monsignor. Placed on leave in 5/2006 after allegations that he sexually abused an altar boy for several years in the 1980s. The Diocese investigated, verified the allegations and placed Johnson on permanent leave in 6/2006. The Diocese admitted it knew of an allegation in 2001 but kept Johnson in ministry. A civil suit was filed in 5/2007 by three men claiming Johnson abused them at various times between 1963 and 1984. One plaintiff withdrew but a fourth man joined the suit. All claims settled in 9/2009. Laicization requested. Died 8/14/2016. Included on the Diocese’s list 1/31/2019.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
