Fr. Joseph Wajda
Abuse of boys allegedly began within two or three months of ordination. Two 1989 civil suits claim Wajda abused at least two boys. Both boys had sought counseling from Wajda. Both suits settled out of court in 1991, one for a “substantial” settlement. Wajda continued as a priest in administrative capacity (including on marriage tribunal) until placed on leave after the 6/02 Bishops’ conference in Dallas. Permanently removed in 2003. Denied all abuse and appealed his case to review board. Included in 12/13 on the archdiocese’s list of credibly accused. Personnel file from St. Paul Archdiocese released 07/9/14. Laicization announced by archdiocese 10/1/16. May have abused an altar boy while a transitional deacon in the early 1970s at St. John the Baptist in New Brighton. Died 4/29/21.

Our Database of Publicly Accused does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The reports contained in the database are merely allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements. For more information, see our posting policy.
