Mary Juanita Barto

Religious Sister of Mercy (RSM). Joined the order in 1952. Professed her final vows in 1957. Accused publicly by a woman in the 2000s of sexually abusing her throughout high school, beginning when the woman was age 15 in the late 1960s. Per Barto's accuser, the abuse occurred in classrooms at Mater Christi High School in Queens, on school buses to sporting events, at retreats in upstate NY, at the girl's home in Woodside and at a Long Island Convent. Barto died 5/2/14. Lawsuit filed 2/18/20; settled in 2020.
Sr. Norma Giannini

Removed from ministry by order in 1992 after archdiocese reported complaints. No report to police. Sent for treatment and assigned to office work. Retired. Publicly accused in 2006 of abusing two male students multiple times in the 1960s at St. Patrick's Elementary School in Milwaukee. Transferred in the 1970s to an all-girls school in the Chicago area. Indicted on two felony counts in 12/06. Admitted to other victims. Sentenced in 2/08 to 1 year in jail, 9 years probation. Released in 4/09. Civil suit filed in 5/09. Died 4/18/11 in Omaha.

Mercedes Graber

Accused in a 6/20 lawsuit of the sexual abuse of a minor from about 1978 to 1981 at Mercy High School in Albany. Joined the Sisters of Mercy in 1944. Died in 1997.
Mary Nazareen
Accused in a lawsuit filed in 1/20 of sexually abusing a girl in the 1960s at Holy Cross School in Rumson when the girl was kindergarten to 7th grade. The school employed the Sisters of Mercy.
Sister Bernadette Marie
Accused in a 6/20 lawsuit of the sexual abuse of a minor from about 1966 to 1967 at St. Teresa of Avila in Albany.

Sr. Mary Geraldine Walsh
Accused in a lawsuit filed in 12/21 of sexually abusing a second-grade boy at St. John's School in Bangor 1957-58, where Walsh was school principal and an 8th-grade teacher. Walsh's accuser said that she sexually abused him in the coatroom several times, after telling him that he had wet his pants and needed to take them off. The man also said he and his classmates were regularly spanked by teachers on their exposed buttocks in front of the class. Walsh died in 1973, age 86.
