Accused in a 1993 letter to Bishop Gettelfinger of sexually abusing a 16-year-old boy in 1976; Allen admitted the abuse in 1994, was sent for treatment, then returned to ministry. His accuser came forward again 5/5/02; Allen was not removed until 6/02. Army chaplain 1972-93. Working in 2004 in a civilian commissary in Kuwait, on contract with the U.S. Military. He was seen saying mass but the Archdiocese of Military Services said he had no privileges.

Associate parish pastor in KY, WI, IN, NM, NE. Pastor in IN, OH, MI, GA. Per a 2003 lawsuit, Belen molested and raped a girl, ages 5-10, several times in the 1970s in Terre Haute. IN. Belen retired in 2001 after a stroke. He claimed too much time had passed and rhw matter should be handled by the church rather than the state. He died 12/11/04. Suit still active as of 2/07.

Fr. William Leroy Blackwell

Died in 1990. Accused in a 2/04 civil suit of sexually abusing a boy at St. Mary School in the late 1950s. Suit alleges abuse occurred at the school and on trips to home of Blackwell's parents in Indianapolis. A second civil suit filed in 8/05 alleged that Blackwell abused another youth between 1956 and 1961 at places including St. Mary's in sacristy and the rectory. On archdiocese's 10/12/18 list. Noted to have eight victims, in 1958 and 1964-68.

Seminarian. Named publicly as accused by the Congregation of Holy Cross on its list 6/12/19. First vows in 1983. The list notes that Blum was dismissed from seminary. Multiple allegations in 1986, after his dismissal, of abuse in IN in the 1980s. Blum reportedly was charged in 1986 after accusation he molested two boys, ages 13 and 16 at Christ the King School. Pled guilty to one of the charges; he had admitted to police to touching "several" teenage boys.

The man first complained in 1988 or 1989; Bishop forced Blume to resign in 1989 after he completed therapy. Suit settled in 11/92. A second man filed suit in 1992 alleging abuse at a different assignment 1985-87. Also worked in Milwaukee, in the 1970s. Laicized 6/23/07. Criminal charges filed in 8/09. Convicted in WI in 1/10; sentenced to 20 years' prison. Appeal denied in 11/12. On Ft. Wayne diocese list 9/18/18. It notes five credlble allegations.

Br. J. Patrick Sheehy

In 6/2021 the Brebeuf Jesuit High School president announced that Sheehy had been credibly accused of sexually abusing a student in 1978, while a resident of the Brebeuf Jesuit Community. School leadership was notified of the allegation in 2/2020. The Jesuits Midwest Province list in 1/2022 revealed multiple allegations agains Sheehy, with incidents 1967, 1975, 1984-1988 while Chaplain of the Marion County Sheriff's Department and residing at Breubeuf. Sheehy entered the order in 1959. He was the Brebeuf High's president 1987-1992. Died 10/23/1992.

Arrested in a nationwide child pornography sting in 5/1996. Removed from public ministry and placed under supervision by his Order. Had been a moral theology professor at St. Meinrad School of Theology for 17 years before resigning in 8/1996. Pleaded guilty in 12/1996 to a federal charge of receiving child pornography in the mail. Sentenced to one year and one day in a federal penitentiary, a $3000 fine, and two years' supervised release. Name appears on the Carmelites' 11/22/20 list of accused. Separated from the Order in 1996. From 1997-2011 he had no ministry, chose exclaustration and was a Federal Facility Prisoner in KY. He died 1/13/2011. Included in the 5/23/2023 IL Attorney General's Report, which shows at least one "reported survivor," of abuse.

Had been living for 11 years in the Servants of the Paraclete treatment facility in Jemez Springs, NM; not allowed to leave without supervision. Per one source in 2002, Clauss was an "incurable pedophile" and had recently been soliciting money from former parishioners who believed he was doing mission work on Indian reservations. Another allegation surfaced 5/02. Clauss died 10/11/03. On the diocese's list 2/22/19. It notes 10 credible allegations and that he admitted to at least 1. Administrative leave 12/90, removed from public ministry 7/92.

The alleged victim wrote two letters in 2021 to the diocese about De Oreo's behavior while he was a teen and parishioner of St. Alphonsus Liguori in Zionsville in 2018 and 2019. The youth claimed he was sexually harrassed and groomed by the priest. De Oreo filed suit against his accuser 4/4/22.

Eder's niece also told the Diocese in 1995 and 2002 that he had fondled her several times as a child. Active priest as of 6/07. Shown as "retired" by 11/10.

Fr. William J. Ehrman

In 2002, a woman alleged abuse by Ehrman as a girl beginning in 1953 or 1954. Her son said he reported the abuse in 1998 but diocesan officials claimed they never received it. Both mother and son met with officials again in 2002 but received no official response. Another woman said Ehrman exposed himself to her in 1968 and kissed her while another woman says he fondled her. In 11/02, Bishop D'Arcy admitted that accusations of abuse against Ehrman "appear to be credible." Ehrman retired in 1970 and died 8/7/83. On diocese's 9/18/18 list, noted to have eight credilbe allegations against him, received after his death.

Fr. Wilfred Englert

Arrested and then placed on leave 8/05 after allegations he sexually molested a 19-year-old man who had the mental capacity of a 9-year old. Abuse occurred numerous times in early 2005. Englert claimed the sex was consensual. He later pleaded guilty to 2 counts of abuse. Sentenced in 10/06 to 2 terms of 1.5 yrs in Dubois County Jail. Received another 3 years in 2/07. Released 1/08. On sex offender registry. Not in compliance 2/10. Listed as on "administrative leave" per diocesan website 2/2/09. On diocese's list 2/22/19. It notes that he was laicized 10/1/09.

Returned to active ministry in 11/27 after the diocesan Review Board determined that the allegation was unsubstantiated.

In 9/02 he was scheduled to return to ministry, per the Bishop, although the Review Board had not seen the psychological evaluation.The Board found that there was "reasonable cause" to believe Graehler took part in "inappropriate" conduct," but that the conduct did not constitute sexual misconduct. Retired in 11/02. Died 2/19/16.

In 12/03, Grass admitted to molesting a preteen girl at Holy Angels Cathedral in the late 1960.s Placed on leave. She told the Diocese in 11/03 and review board investigated. Grass was in the hospital for cancer treatment when news broke. He was no longer allowed to live in his parish residence. Bishop said he believed that the girl was Grass's only victim. Had Monsignor status when he died 7/2/2010. Included on Gary list released 8/27/18.

Accused in a 10/20/2011 suit of abusing a boy, beginning in 1975; boy attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish and school, Grear was dean of students at Brebeuf Jesuit Prep. Accused in a 9/2018 suit of abuse of boy at a Catholic youth rally in 1982. Accuser said he told Bishop Gallagher in confession the next week, who told him to ask God to forgive him, and not to tell anyone else. Suits in 11/2018 by two men allege Grear abused them as boys. On diocese's list in 9/2018. Had been removed from public ministry in 10/2001, faculties removed. A suit filed in AZ in 10/2020 claims abuse of a boy starting in 1977. The boy was a Navajo Nation citizen; Grear worked at Chinle High School late 1970s-early 1980s. The suit says Grear was sent to AZ after allegations in IN, working mostly in Native American and rural communities. In 1982-1983 he was principal of a Crow Creek Sioux high school in SD, then back to AZ. Later moved to schools in MD, Guam, and NYC. Also taught at some point in the Virgin Islands. Included on the Gallup diocese's list of credibly accused in 11/2021.

Fr. David Huneck

The diocese announced on 9/27/21 that on 9/19/21 that it had received notice of an allegation that Huneck "was engaging in sexual and other misconduct, including that with a minor." He resigned from his position as pastor of St. Paul of the Cross in Columbia City and as chaplain of Bishop Dwenger High School in Fort Wayne, and was suspended from all ministry by the diocese. His name was added to the diocese's list of credibly accused. He was charged 10/8/21 with sexual abuse involving two female teenagers, one a minor. The two knew him from his role at Bishop Dwenger. Huneck allegedly invited them on two occasions to his parish home, gave them alcohol, groped them after he became intoxicated and, on the second occasion, exposed himself. In a 12/21 plea deal, Huneck agreed to plead guilty to the felony charges of child solicitation and sexual battery if the misdemeanor charges against him were dropped. Pleaded guilty and sentenced in 3/22 to 180 days' home detention and two years' probation.


Fr. Basil Hutsko

Priest of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Parma. Assigned to St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Merrillville when placed on leave in 10/18. Had been accused in 2004 of abusing a girl between 1979 and 1983. Church investigated in 2004, said not enough evidence. Deemed credible in 2018. In 8/18 Hutsko claimed he was attacked by an unknown person inside his church and that the assailant yelled, "This is for all the kids!" The FBI investigated it as a potential hate crime. The 'incident' was found to be fabricated by Hutsko. The Eparchy of Parma announced in 8/20 that Hutsko was permanently banned from public ministry. He was ordered to live a life of prayer and penance.

Noted to have six allegations against him. Report to diocese in 3/02 of abuse by Kavungal in 1982. He was assigned 1981-84 to Ss Peter and Paul in Merrillville. Reportedly returned to India by 11/85. Worked in schools 1991-2000. Went to Sweden 9/00, where a woman accused him of sexual harrassment; left Sweden 1/04. Moved to Kenya. Back to India 2005. Last known to be in India and removed from public ministry.

Fr. Micheal H. Kelley

Accused in 1989 of abuse of a youth who had just turned 18. Had known the boy since he was a child. Youth reported it to Archdiocese immediately but nothing done. Complained again in 2002; Kelley sent to St. Luke's in MD for treatment. Placed on leave 8/02. Diocesan investigation did not clear Kelley who did admit to misconduct with adults. On archdiocese's 10/12/18 list. Noted to have two victims, allegedly abused in 1990 and 1992.

Prior to New Orleans, Knoth worked at universities in Washington DC and Chicago. The abuse is alleged to have occurred in 1986. He denied it. Order deemed complaint credible. Privileges removed. As of 1/2007 Knoth was working in private business in Sarasota, FL. Laicized 8/29/2009. On the Indianapolis archdiocese's list 10/12/2018. On the New Orleans archdiocese's list 11/2/2018. At a Senate hearing in 2/19 a man testified that when he was age 9 and a student at Christ the King school, Kuper sexually abused him multiple times. The man's family reportedly informed the diocese of the allegations in 8/18. Kuper was pastor of Christ the King 1977-87. Assignments also included St. Agnes and Holy Rosary, and St. Bernard in Rockport. He was also superintendent of Rex Mundi High School at some point and diocesan superintendent 1972-77. Retired in 2006. Died 11/13/12. Name not included on the diocese's list 2/22/19. The diocese announced in 6/20 that it could not substantiate the allgegations.

Sent for treatment in 1998, reassigned in 1999. Info became public 2002 when nephew came forward after Kurzendoerfer was removed from parish. Sent for therapy again 2002 after violating restrictions. Moved to Nashville in 2002; worked there until 2004 when boss learned of his past. On diocese's list 2/22/19. It notes four credible allegations and that he admitted to two. Laicized 11/1/09.

Fr. Paul Francis LeBrun

Arrested in 2002. Accused of sexually abusing boys in the Ft. Wayne-South Bend IN diocese and the Phoenix AZ diocese. Denied the allegations. Documents show that LeBrun's order knew of his abuse of children as early as 1987, the year he was transferred to AZ. Returned to IN in 1993. Resigned from his parish in 1999, sent to Southdown in Toronto for treatment. Convicted in 2005 in AZ; sentenced in 2006 to 111 years in prison. Laicized in 2008. Five lawsuits which name LeBrun as an abuser were settled by the Phoenix Diocese for a total of $75K. Conviction upheld by AZ Court of Appeals in 7/2009. Included on Ft. Placed on leave in 12/11 from assignment at St. Joseph Hessen Cassel parish in Fort Wayne after recent allegation that he had had "contact with a minor," about age 16, in approximately 1997. Lombardi was assigned to St. Louis Besancon from 1986 to July 1997. Police unable to investigate because no victim had come forward. Accuser wanted to remain anonymous. On diocese's 9/18/18 list. Noted to have been removed from public ministry 8/9/15, with one credible allegation against him. Died 12/28/17.

Fr. Ralph G. Luczak

A woman said in 2003 that Luczak molested her at age 10 on several occasions in the summer of 1969, at her grandmother's lake house near a Holy Cross retreat house. She told her mom, who told a doctor and the police. Nothing was done. The mom then told a priest; Luczak was sent to CA. The alleged victim thought Luczak was going to a monastery, but he was placed at a high school. Luczak died at age 38 in 1970 in San Francisco, CA. The Order said there was nothing in his personnel file regarding abuse. Included on the Order's list 6/12/2019. Added to the Fort Wayne-South Bend diocese's list 1/18/2020. Included in the IL Attorney General's 5/23/2023 IL Attorney General's Report (with an incorrect death year).

Fr. Robert J. Mahoney

Two men filed civil suits in 1992 and 1993 against the diocese and Mahoney. First plaintiff claimed Mahoney "assaulted, battered and raped" him 1981-83 as a child at an elementary school in South Bend; second claimed abuse 1970-72 at school in Mishawaka. Suits were dismissed 12/93 and 2/94 "with prejudice." No reasons were provided. Resigned from ministry 6/15/93. Laicized 7/25/06. On diocese's 9/18/18 list, noting four credible allegations.


Fr. David J. Marcotte

Suspended in 2/19 by the archdiocese after it received an allegation that Marcotte sexually abused a teenage boy in 2016. Criminally charged in 10/19 with child solicitation, vicarious sexual gratification, and dissemination of matter harmful to minors. Archdiocese was sued in 7/20 by insurance company for failure to disclose allegations against Marcotte. Pleaded guilty in 3/22 to the of dissemination of matter harmful to minors. To be sentenced 4/7/22. Plea deal rejected by a judge in 4/22. Sentenced in a plea deal in 11/22 to a year of home detention followed by 18 months' probation. He was not required to register as a sex offender. 


Fr. John S. Maung

Native of India. Worked in Burma and San Francisco, then Indianapolis beginning 1981. Incardinated 1986. Charged in 1998 with forgery and theft, accused of stealing around $14K from St. Joseph parish in Shelbyville. Charges dropped when he agreed to repay some of the money. Retired 2009. Suspension announced by the archdiocese 8/30/18 after it received an allegation that Maung abused a child 1993-97. Maung denied the allegation. Included on archdioces's list 10/12/18.

Named publicly as credibly accused by the Diocese of Owensboro on its list in 5/22. Worked in the diocese off and on 1983-1996. Also had assignments in the Diocese of Evansville and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Per the Owensboro list, there was one allegation of abuse, occurring while Messick was in Indianapolis. Messick was a teacher and parish priest, and he served on the the Tribunals for the Diocese of Owensboro and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. He died in 2011.


Fr. Elden Joseph Miller

Retired 7/03. Removed from public ministry 12/18/06. Died in 7/26/08. Name released in 8/18 by Bishop Rhoades as accused. In 2015 a 60-year-old woman told the diocese Miller sexually abused her over a 5-year period in the 1960s, beginning when she was age 6. Her grandmother was a housekeeper in the the St. Joseph rectory in Mishawaka. Per the diocese, there are credible allegations against Miller from three other people. On diocese's 9/18/18 list, noting two credible allegations. The diocese's updated list in 9/21 shows four credible allegations.

Fr. Harold Monroe

Moved several times over 10 years. Removed in 1981 after a woman complained of abuse of her son. "Relieved" by Archbishop O'Meara in 1984. Youth whose mother reported the 1981 abuse died by suicide before age 20. Accused of abuse of many youths before 1984. Gave them marijuana and alcohol. Named in 13 suits filed 2005-06. Admitted abuse of at least 5 in deposition. Diocese knew by 1976. One claim settled 5/10 for $199K. Original plaintiff settled 9/10. On archdiocese's 10/12/18 list, with 16 victims noted and abuse occurring 1976-82. Laicized 4/8/11.

Fr. Eugene Jack Okon

Professor of psychology and theology. Wrote self-help books popular with adolescent girls. Sued in 2003. Accused of abuse of 7 girls in the 1960s and 1970s. Settlement with 6 (2 suits) in 10/2005. Named in another suit filed in  10/2006. A woman claimed he abused her in 1975 or 1976 when she was a Loyola University student. A civil suit filed in 11/2008 alleged that Powell fondled and abused a girl, age 16-17, at Rosarian Academy in West Palm Beach, FL when he conducted a seminar there. Per the Province's list revised 1/21/2020, abuse is alleged to have occurred in 1963 while Powell was a visiting retreat director at St. Mary's College of Notre Dame University. Died 9/24/2009. Included on the Detroit archdiocese's list of credibly accused 6/10/2019. On Ft. Wayne-South Bend's list in 12/2020. Included in the 5/23/2023 IL Attorney General's Report, which notes at least 4 "reported survivors," of abuse in 1963 in IN, 1966-1967 in IL, 1967 in IL, and 1967 in FL. The Order's list updated 10/30/2023 reflects this.

Fr. Ponciano M. Ramos

From the Philippines. Pleaded guilty in 1993 to three misdemeanors for strip-searching young boys in Indianapolis after they set off stink bombs in the parish school. Sentenced to an 18-month suspended sentence and 15 months' probation. Was moved to Chicago and then to the Diocese of San Bernardino, CA. Placed on leave in 4/2002. Allowed to return to restricted duty with the Order in 2003. Included on the San Bernardino diocese's list in 10/2018; noted to be permanently banned from ministry in the diocese. Died in 2021. Included on the Society of the Divine Word's Chicago and Western Provinces lists. Included in the 5/23/2023 IL Attorney General's Report.

Fr. Cornelius J. Ryan

Worked in Uganda and Kenya 1967-2002, where he was a well-known soccer coach. Returned to Provincial House in South Bend in 2001. Removed without privileges 6/10/13 from Saint Joseph's in Hessen Cassel after recent credible allegation that he had sexually abused a boy in Africa about 20 years previously. When confronted by the diocese, Ryan admitted the allegations were true. On order's list 6/12/19. It notes multiple allegations of sex abuse occurring in the 1980s in Africa, received in 2013. In a long-term treatment facility without access to minors.

Fr. John Bernard Schoettelkotte

Suit settled in 6/05 in exchange for publishing statements from plaintiff and Archbishop Buechlein in the archdiocesan newspaper. At least one other woman alleged abuse. Fr. Othmar H. Schroeder

Died 2/16/88. Allegations of abuse by Schroeder 1947-75 at Holy Family parish were made public 8/18/07. Bishop Gettelfinger stated that he knew of allegations in 1996 but recently learned that the "scope is greater than we knew." By 8/31/07 there were claims of abuse of at least 10 boys and girls. Schroeder began as a priest of the then-diocese of Indianapolis. His first parish was in Lawrence IN, near Cincinnati, now in the archdiocese of Indianapolis. On the diocese's list 2/22/19.

Fr. Francis A. Schroering

Accused in 2002 of fondling two girls in the 1960s. Removed in 6/02. HIs accusers were asked to meet with a psychologist who was to make a report to the Diocesan Review Board. In 9/02 the Board considered one claim and recommended that Schroering be "immediately" reinstated. The other claim was not considered because the girl was 18 at the time of the alleged abuse. Retired in 6/03 due to "illness." Died 6/1/05. At one parish, admitted abuser Fr. Mark Kurzendoerfer was Schroering's assistant pastor.

Fr. Bruce A. Schutt

Laicized 5/9/75.

High school principal. Head of Catholic Schools beginning 1970. Resigned and retired 1/14 after diocese received complaint of sexual abuse of minor alleged to have occurred about 44 years before. Review Board deemed allegation credible. Matter referred to Rome. As of 1/27/14 three more accusers had come forward with credible allegations. Removed from public ministry 10/13/15. Per a 1995 civil suit, Sego abused a girl when she was in elementary school 27 years prior. Suit dismissed on SOL. Admitted exposing himself to one young girl and having another undress and dance for him. Removed from ministry in 1994. Lived under restrictions in a priest retirement home near St. Louis until his death 9/7/98. Abuse allegations involve young girls, teenagers, and pregnant girls. Lived and traveled with Bishop Higi for many years. On diocese's list 9/28/18.

Fr. Stanley Staniszewski

Accused of sexual abuse per 7/2007 news article. Reportedly was living in FL, no longer in active ministry. Accused in a civil suit in Gary of abuse of a boy at Casimir Catholic Church's grade school 1979-1981. Included on the Gary diocese's list released 8/27/2018. Noted to have died 4/2/2016. Per his obituary, Staniszewski had been living in Glen Ellyn, IL. Included in 10/2022 on the Chicago archdiocese's list of credibly accused. Included in the 5/23/2023 IL Attorney General's Report.

Fr. Jonathan L. Stewart

A woman filed suit in 3/04 on behalf of her 17-year- old son. Stewart allegedly molested the boy at ages 7 to 13 from 1993 through 1999. Restricted ministry after allegations received in 2/01. Removed from ministry in 2003. Church investigation continued. Church denied it knew abuse continued through 1999. Plaintiff's attorney said social workers at Family Social Services found evidence of the abuse. Jury awarded $155K in damages 4/25/08. On archdiocese's list 10/12/18.

Tracey was fired from his job at Lafayette Central Catholic High School in the early 1980s for abusing a male student in an incident involving alcohol. Was retired when he died 6/4/89. Caught in a sting ordering child pornography for delivery to the Holy Rosary rectory, where he was pastor. Inspectors found 92 videos in a trunk in the rectory, many of them 'extremely graphic and explicit child porn.' Resigned 12/8/95; convicted and sent to prison for a year. As of 2008, Vogler was lead priest at Holy Trinity parish, director of diocese's deacon program, and member of the priests' council. Retired 9/2/11 per diocese website accessed 2/26/12. Allowed active ministry until removed 2/19/19, just before the diocese released its list of credibly accused clerics.On the diocese's list 2/22/19.

Fr. Ronald J. Voss

Accused of sexually abusing 8-9 teenage boys; resigned ministry in 1993 and moved to Haiti. May have functioned as a priest there as late as 1997. One youth died of a heart attack after disclosing abuse. Laicized in 1998. In 2004 Voss was running Visitation House in Port au Prince--a guest facility for those who visit Haiti to aid the poor. Living as of 7/08 on Abaco in the Bahamas. On Lafayette IN diocese's list 9/28/18.

Fr. Raymond H. Wieber

Accused of sexually abusing teen boys. Lawsuit (later dropped) claimed Wieber used alcohol and LSD in repeated and systematic sex abuse 1969-70. Ran a popular youth program during the 1970s. Warnings about his character were noted in his personnel file before ordination, but no efforts to supervise him. Granted leave in 11/92. Died 8/17/93. On diocese's list 9/28/18.
