His victim filed a civil suit in 1995. Settlement. Personnel file produced to court in 1999. Ahearn died in 12/1997. Accused in a lawsuit in 1/2021 of sexually abusing a St. Mary's in Bethel altar boy, ages 7-10, including raping the boy at age 9 in 1992, on the day of the boy's sister's wedding.

Fr. Henry A. Albeke

Multiple allegations. Placed on leave in 8/2002 after a man reported he had been abused as a minor by Albeke in 1978 at St. Jude's in Monroe. Claims against Albeke (also spelled Albecke) were settled by the Diocese in a massive settlement  in 10/2003. The Diocese paid $21M to 40 people with claims of abuse by 16 priests. Laicized in 2007. Per a report commissioned by the Diocese in 2019, Holzberg abused a girl, age 14, in 1976; a boy, age 12 in 1976-1977; a boy, age 16 in 1978.

From Australia. Professed vows as a Christian Brother in 1959. Reportedly worked at an orphanage in Geelong, Victoria 1970-1978. Alleged to have sexually abused several residents there. Arrived in the U.S. in 1993 where he worked for 10 years at the Academy at Mount Saint John for at risk children in Deep River. Per news in 11/2018, Alford was named in lawsuits filed by 24 men claiming they were sexually assaulted as 11- to 15-year-old residents of the facility 1986-1996. Named in two of the suits, one in which he was accused of forcing a 13-year-old boy to perform oral sex. Alford was the leader of the school's Boys Scout troop. He died 4/14/2004.

Removed from ministry 2/3/2012. Accused in a lawsuit filed in 4/2018 of the sexual abuse of a boy, ages 7-15, starting in 1976. Per the suit, the boy's mother died suddenly in 1979 and Altermatt offered to help the family. The abuse allegedly occurred in the rectory of St. Anne's in Waterbury, a Waterbury movie theater, Altermatt's car, the boy's home in Bristol and the priest's mother's Florida condominium, where he had taken the boy on vacation. Included on the archdiocese's list 1/22/2019.

Accused of sexually assaulting a former altar boy in 1985 at St. Anthony of Padua in Bridgeport, CT. Case was settled with others by the Bridgeport diocese in 10/2003. (Name occasionally spelled Bonaszek or Bonzszek.) Added to the Richmond diocese's list 6/27/2019, where he was assigned 1974-1975. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the Bridgeport diocese, there were two victims of abuse occurring 1977-1987, one age 15, both boys. Left the diocese in 1987. Died in 2007.

At least four men alleged in 2002 that Bietighofer abused them late 1970s and early 1980s at Blessed Sacrament parish. Sent to St. Luke's for treatment 5/2002; hung himself in his room. Worked in Peru in 1974 and 1986. A diocesan official knew of a complaint against Bietighofer in 1996. Claims against Bietighofer were settled by the Diocese as part of massive settlement in 10/2003; the Diocese paid $21M to 40 people claiming abuse by 16 priests. Another allegation was received in 12/2009. Per a report commissioned by the diocese in 2019, there were 17 victims, ages 12-15, of abuse occurring 1959-1989.

Another victim filed civil suit 2002 and in 7/2006, the CT Supreme Court ruled that the suit was timely filed and sent it back down to lower court to be tried. Laicized 5/20/2005; announced in 3/2006. Cited in a 11/2008 RICO suit. Died 12/24/2008. Accused in suit filed in 11/2015 of rape of a NM altar boy, who alleged rape also by Fr. James Porter. Included on the Duluth diocese's list in 12/2015. Accused in a 12/17/2015 suit of raping an altar boy, age 7-12, hundreds of times 1968-1973 at St. Alice's in Mountainair NM. Fr. Laurence F.X. Brett

Accused of abusing over two dozen altar boys and others, ages 10-18, throughout his priesthood, in CT, NM, CA, MD and Mexico. Two known female victims. Sent by the Bridgeport diocese to  Servants of the Paraclete in NM for treatment in 1964, after parents of one victim complained to the papal nuncio and Brett admitted abuse. Bishop Curtis wrote in a memo that "hepatitis was to be feigned" as the reason Brett was leaving. Settlement for $250K in 1994 to two victims molested in Sacramento, CA. Chaplain at Calvert Hall in Baltimore 1972-1974; at least 14 former students alleged abuse. In MD Brett produced widely used Share the Word materials 1974-1993. In 1990 Bishop Egan met Brett, who 'made a good impression'. Egan removed him from ministry in 1993 when suit was filed v Bridgeport diocese. It settled for $750K. Fled to the  Caribbean in 1993; reportedly continued contact with children there. People connected to the Church knew his whereabouts and visited him, not telling law enforcement. Located in 2002 by reporters; fled again. Included on Baltimore archdiocese's list 9/25/2002. Laicized in 2006. Named in 2008 civil suit. Settlement in 2008 for $80K. Died 12/25/2010. On Santa Fe archdiocese list 9/12/2017. Included in the 4/5/2023 MD Attorney General's Report.

Fr. Joseph F. Buckley

A man filed civil suit in 2003 alleging that he was sexually abused at age 14 by Buckley in 1971. The man claimed that Buckley gave him a soft drink spiked with rum, enticed him to join him in the shower, sexually assaulted him, then gave him $20. Encounters said to have occurred on several occasions. Buckley retired in 1970 and died in 1975. He was apparently retired at the time of the alleged abuse. Claim included in a 11/2005 massive settlement. Included on the Norwich diocese's list 2/22/1209, having worked there at some point.

Fr. Richard T. Buongirno

Accused in 1991 by a woman of abuse of her 9-year-old son, which Buongirno denied. Social services deemed the allegation unsubstantiated. The alleged victim sued in 2000 claiming abuse 1990-1998; the diocese settled in 2003 for $700K. Accused in 1994 of abusing a 16-year-old boy for three years in the 1970s, when Buongirno was a lay teacher. Sent by the diocese to the Institute of Living, then returned to ministry. Removed from ministry in 1998. Cited in a 11/2008 RICO suit. Per diocese's list 2/22/2019, Buongirno was laicized in 2005. Included on the diocese's list of accused in 2/2019.

Fr. Stephen H. Bzdyra

A man filed suit in 7/2010 alleging that Bzdyra abused him in the mid-1980s while assigned to St. Francis in New Haven. Per the suit, Bzdyra threatened the boy and his family and later tried to silence him by buying him home appliances and a car in 2001. Also named in a previous suit. Placed on leave 7/9/2010. Another suit was filed in 8/2010. Too ill to testify in 11/2010. A third suit was filed in 12/2010. Settlement in 2/2016. Per the archdiocese's list 1/22/2019, Bzdyra was laicized 5/4/2018. He died in 10/2019.

Worked for 25 years as a CPA before ordination. Arrested; arraigned 7/3/2012. Admitted addiction to child porn for two years but denied any improper touching of a child. Pleaded not guilty. In treatment in 9/2012 at St. John Vianney. Died 5/20/2013. Included on the diocese's list in 2/2019.

Accused in 1995 of molesting two boys in separate incidents years prior. Placed on leave. Civil litigation filed. Four claims against Carr settled in 3/2001 as part of a settlement of claims by 26 victims against the Bridgeport Diocese and six priests. Per a 2002 article, Carr spent more than 10 years with the Carmelite Order; he took perpetual vows in 1974 but was not allowed ordination because of emotional immaturity. The Bridgeport diocese then allowed him to study and be ordained. Removed from ministry in 2002. Laicized in 2005. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the diocese, there were 12 victims, ages 9-15, of abuse 1979-1990, mostly boys, at least one girl.

Sued 10/17/2014 in federal court in CT by man accusing Carrier of sexually abusing him as a teen 10 years prior at Project Pierre Toussaint School in Haiti. The school was a charity supported by Fairfield University, where Carrier was chaplain. Plaintiff also claimed abuse by Doug Perlitz, a school founder supervised by Carrier, who was convicted in 12/2010 of sexually abusing boys there. In 10/2014 Carrier was residing at Weston Jesuit Center in MA.

Suit filed 1/2009; decided for plaintiff by judge when diocese failed to produce docs. A third suit filed 3/2010; diocese said plaintiff was not abused. Per 2019 report commissioned by the diocese, there were 14 victims, ages 6-14, of abuse occurring 1987-2001. Mostly boys, at least one girl.

Ordained for the Diocese of Richmond, VA. Worked in CT as a visiting priest beginning in 1975. Per his obituary, worked in Korona, FL for 15 years until his death 1/13/2011.

Named publicly in 9/2019 by the diocese as credibly accused of abuse of two minors, more than 50 years prior. Cleary was pastor of Our Lady of Peace in Stratford 1963-1989. He died in 1989. (Not to be mistaken for Bridgeport priest Vincent P. Cleary in the diocese ordained in 1939 and who died in 1965.) Included on the diocese's list updated 1/22/2020. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the diocese, there were two victims, both girls ages 8-10, of abuse 1945-1954.

Fr. Walter Phillip Coleman

Diocese knew of complaints in the 1970s; investigated in 1994. Per a 1994 lawsuit, Coleman abused a boy for five years, giving him gifts and money. Allowed to function for several months before "retiring." Went on to work as a priest in the Miami FL archdiocese. Suit resolved for undisclosed sum in 1995. Another suit in 1996. Claims also settled in 2001 and 2003. Faculties removed in 2002. New suit 9/27/2010 claimed abuse of a 10-year-old boy in 1972. Died in 10/2016. Five cases involving four priests, including Coleman, settled in 5/2017. New lawsuits in 9/2018 with claims of abuse by Coleman of two altar boys at St. Patrick's in Bridgeport in the 1970s and 1980s. A third man claimed Coleman abused him as a child at St. Joseph's in Brookfield in the 1980s. Settlement in 3/2019. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the diocese, there were 12 victims, all boys ages 6-14, abused 1969-1982.

A civil suit filed by a woman in 2/2008 accused Curry of sexually abusing her for 8 years, beginning in 1966 when she was age 8 and Curry was assigned to St. Mary's. She said that after each assault he would tell her to ask God to forgive her sin and for tempting Curry. The filing of this suit exposed a 1983 suit in which Curry was accused of abusing his housekeeper's 11-year-old daughter in 1980-1981 at the same church. That suit settled in 1986. Police were notified in 1981; no action. Curry died in 1986. In 4/2019 a 60-year-old man testified before the CT Judiciary Committee that, when he was age 8, Curry sexually assaulted him four Sundays in a row at St. Joseph's in Noank. Included on the diocese's list in 2/2019.

Sr. Linda Cusano

Accused in a 5/23/2003 lawsuit of sexually assaulting a female high school senior repeatedly in 1991-1992 and pressuring her to join the order. Parents say they complained about Cusano's closeness with their daughter at the time but were brushed off. Cusano was reportedly sent to treatment in 2002.

Arrested in 12/2011 on charges of sexual activity with at least one child. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the diocese, there was one victim, an 8-year-old girl, abused in 2008.

Michael Melendez, who is accused of failing to report the incidents involving the boys and Fr. Doyle.

Fr. Joseph Michael DeShan

Reportedly in 4/2002, DeShan had a sexual 'relationship' with a 14- or 15-year-old girl in 1988. The girl became pregnant in 1989. DeShan took a leave of absence after telling Bishop Egan. Egan allowed him to leave the priesthood and to begin a new life as elementary school teacher, with no record of sexual misconduct. Laicized in  1999. Teaching in NJ in 2002 when the allegation was revealed. Temporarily placed on leave for three weeks; allowed to return to teaching. Claim settled in 10/2003. Suspended again from a Cinnaminson NJ public middle school teaching job in early 2019 after parents concerned about his history demanded his removal. A 12-year-old girl, who was his student, complained in 12/2018 that he made her feel uncomfortable when he complimented her eyes. In 4/2019 the state Dept. of Education ordered the district to return DeShan to his job. Per a report commissioned by the diocese in 2019, there was one victim, a 15-year-old girl, abused 1988-1989.

Fr. William D. Donovan

Resigned in 4/2002 after sentenced to 150 days in state jail for a third DWI conviction. Admitted to a sexual 'relationship' with a young man who might have been a minor. Church deemed the allegations credible. Claims against Donovan settled by the diocese as part of a massive settlement in 10/2003; the diocese paid $21M to 40 people alleging abuse by priests. Per the diocese's list updated 3/22/2019, there were multiple allegations against Donovan. He died in 2018. A report commissioned by the diocese in 2019 states there were eight victims, boys and at least one girl, ages 15-17, abused 1967-1993.

Accused of molesting twin brothers over a 10-year period while pastor of Sacred Heart in Vernon CT, starting when the boys were 14 in about 1980. The boys allegedly told counselors in 1983. One of the counselors, Franciscan Br. DeMatteis, is also alleged to have made sexual advances toward one of the twins. In 1992, the diocese removed Doyle and the Marianists suspended him. Civil suit filed in 1995. Two more accusers later came forward. Doyle was treated in both NM and MD. Laicized in 2002. Died 3/20/2007. Included in 2/2019 on the Diocese of Norwich's list. Included on the Marianists list of accused 6/24/2020. Added in 11/2020 to Baltimore's list, where he worked 1967-1973. Included on the Cincinnati archdiocese's list in 2/2022. Fr. John J. Draper

Named publicly by the diocese on its list updated 3/22/2019. Died under mysterious circumstances in 1966 at age 39. Had checked into a hotel under an assumed name. Reportedly was found dead in the bathtub. Had been injured. One known credible allegation, investigated after his death. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the diocese, the abuse occurred in 1958.

Fr. Martin J. Federici

Placed on leave after a lawsuit filed in 9/1996 alleged that Federici sexually abused a 12-year-old boy in a confessional and rectory in 1981. Two suits filed in 1996 and one in 1999 alleged abuse of 16-year-old, 13-year-old and another teen. One settled in 1999 and others in 2001. Additional claim(s) settled in 2003. Laicization announced in 5/2003. New suit filed in 2010 by a convicted rapist who alleged abuse by Federici 1976-1977. Federici died 5/7/2013. Five cases naming four priests of the diocese, including Federici, settled in 5/2017. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the diocese, there were 19 victims, boys and girls ages 8-17, abused 1967-1994.

Fr. Ivan Ferguson

Ordained an Auxiliary Priest of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles in an Apostolic Vicariate in the Diocese of St. Joseph of the Amazon, Peru. Incardinated in 1979 into the Archdiocese of Hartford. Removed from ministry 3/4/1993. Three men claimed in 1993 civil suits abuse as minors by Ferguson in the 1970s. One suit was withdrawn, two were settled. Still a priest in 3/2002, but no ministerial or teaching duties. Died 12/16/2002. At least two claims were included in a 10/2005 $14M settlement with the Archdiocese involving 14 priests. Separate suits were filed by three brothers in 8/2007 and 11/2007 alleging abuse in the late 1970s. In 7/2008 two more suits were filed claiming abuse in 1981. The Archdiocese was found negligent in a 2012 civil trial before jury. Judgment of $1M for one plaintiff. Archdiocese asked supreme court to overturn the verdict as of 9/12/2014. Fr. William J. Fletcher

Died in 4/1988. In 7/2006 a woman filed suit, alleging Fletcher abused her at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque parish in Shelton in the early 1960s, beginning when she was age 7. The Diocese said that there were no other allegations against him. Settlement(s). Per a 2019 report commissioned by the Diocese, the abuse occurred in 1964 and involved digital penetration under the girl's dress at school.

Fr. Stephen C. Foley

Named in multiple civil suits by men claiming abuse when they were teenagers. Allegedly used his position as fire and police chaplain to meet victims and to lure them into 'relationships.' One accuser's father reported Foley to the Archdiocese in the 1960s. Not removed until 1993 after a man told police. Removed from position as state police chaplain around the same time. Settlement of $500K in 3/2007. Settlement of $600K in 3/2008. A $750K settlement in 1/2009. Total of 13 settlements in all by 2009. Laicized 4/29/2016.

Fr. Toribio Villacastin

From the Diocese of Tagblaran, Philippines. Visiting priest in the Archdiocese of Hartford 1968-1971. Left the priesthood in 1977. Died in 2008. In 2/2023 the Archdiocese announced a settlement in the low six figures with a woman who filed a claim in 2019 alleging that she was sexually abused as a child by Villacastin. The woman said the abuse occurred multiple times when she ages 8-9 during 1969-1970, in the St. Isaac Jogues Church sacristy and elsewhere.


Fr. James A. Gay

The list notes a single allegation, that Gay left diocesan service in 1984, his faculties were removed in 2006, and administrative leave was reaffirmed in 2019. They alleged abuse by Genuario and another priest, Frank Wissel. Money was for therapy for three years. The accusers had recently learned that the priests were still active. Genuario was vicar general of the diocese for nine years. Both priests denied the allegations. Another settlement in 1/2006. Remained a "priest in good standing" in 3/2014. Died in 6/2015. The Diocese acknowledged in 9/2019 that the allegations were credible. Per news in 9/2019, a man told the Diocese in 4/2002 that Genaurio abused him at age 13 in 1967. In 2017 another man alleged abuse as a minor in 1987, deemed credible by the review board. Settlement of $725K announced in  10/2019 with a man claiming abuse at age 11 in 1988 by Genuario. Name included on the diocese's list 1/22/2020. A 2019 report commissioned by the Diocese states there were 6 victims, all boys ages 10-14, abused 1967-1987.

Fr. James J. Gildea

In 1991, a man reported to the Diocese abuse by Gildea 1976-1979, beginning when the man was age 13 and a student at Notre Dame High School. The abuse occurred during trips Gildea took to Wilkes-Barre PA to visit his sick mother. The Diocese settled 7/31/2006. Gildea allegedly used his power as guidance counselor to threaten the boy. Another man went public 8/4/2006 about a $60K settlement the Diocese offered him in 8/2002; he had reported abuse by Gildea 1958-1966, starting when he was age 7 or 8 and continuing into his first two years at Notre Dame High School. The victim's attorney in the 7/31/2006 settlement stated she knew of a third victim. Gildea died 7/5/1986. Five cases involving four priests of diocese, including Gildea, settled in 5/2017. Included on his Order's list 6/12/2019. A 2019 report commissioned by the Diocese states there were 9 victims, all boys ages 14-15, abused 1965-1982. (The report mistakenly says Gildea was removed in 2002.)

One said he told another priest in 1971. Glynn retired 11/1/1987. He died 1/25/1993 at age 80. At least one claim was included in a 10/2005 settlement with the Archdiocese.

Fr. Joseph H. Gorecki

One man said Gorecki fondled him on several occasions. He told his mom; she complained to a nun at school. Shortly thereafter, Gorecki was "gone." He spent time outside the diocese before he was reassigned to other parishes. Another settlement in 3/2011. Included on the Norwich diocese's list 2/22/2019. (Name spelled "Gorecky".) Worked in the diocese 1964-1966. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the Diocese, there were 20 victims, all boys ages 7-17, abused 1960-1978.

Fr. Paul Gotta

Administrator of St. Phillip's in East Windsor and St. Catherine's in Broad Brook. Removed in 7/2013 while the Archdiocese investigated a complaint that he sexually abused a minor. Law enforcement was notified, investigation launched. Arrested 7/19/2013 on federal firearms charges. Released 7/25/2013. In 6/2013 he had reported an 18-year-old youth to police for threats against the boy's school. Arrested 3/31/2014 on sex assault charges. Allegedly made boy strip and assaulted him before giving him his paycheck. Pleaded not guilty. Sex assault charges dropped in a plea agreement in 11/15; pleaded guilty to second degree breach of peace. Six-month suspended sentence. Pleaded guilty in 3/2016 to distributing explosives to a minor. (Helped a teen make a pipe bomb.) Sentenced in 2017 to nine months in prison. Per the Archdiocese's list 1/22/2019, canonical process underway.

Claim settled by the Diocese as part of a massive $21M settlement in 10/2003 with 40 people claiming abuse by 16 priests, including Gray. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the Diocese, there was one victim of Gray, a 16-year-old boy, abused 1981-1982.

Settled in 10/2007 for $170K. Another suit filed in 12/2008 alleged later abuse. Died 5/5/2010. New suit 8/2016, alleging abuse of a Pomfret altar boy hundreds of times 1990-1996, beginning when the boy was age 11. Hebert allegedly photographed and videotaped the boy while in sex acts, lavished him with gifts and plied him with alcohol. Settled in 3/2019 for $900K. Included on the diocese's list in 2/2019.

Fr. Raymond J. Jean

Jean died in 6/2001, just before scheduled trial in that case. A third suit was filed in early 2003. One settlement for $275K. Included on the diocese's list in 2/2019.

Spiritual director of the diocese's Emmaus retreat program for youth in Danbury. Assigned to St. Anthony's for eight years, then assigned to St. Joseph's Maronite Catholic Church in Waterville, ME. He was reportedly removed from the priesthood in 2017 after the allegation surfaced and the Eparchy of St. Maron of Brooklyn, NY deemed it substantiated. Diocese settled for $3.55M with five men claiming abuse as children by three priests, including one who accused Jensen.

Fr. Donat M. Jette

Per a 2019 report commissioned by the Diocese, there were two victims, both 13-year-old boys, abused 1962-1965.

Fr. Felix H. Maguire

Claims against Maguire were included in the 10/2005 $22M settlement between the Archdiocese and 45 people alleging abuse by 14 priests. Died 7/13/2008. Fr. Joseph J. Malloy

In 2001 a man accused Malloy of fondling him on one occasion when he was 8 or 9 in 1980. Malloy denied the allegation. Diocese investigation deemed the accusation "not credible" and Malloy was still an active priest as of 2009. Malloy was included in a 2001 global settlement of claims by 26 people against the diocese and 5 priests over the years. Total settlement was about $15M. Died 1/7/2016. In 2019 a 55-year-old man told a news outlet that when he was age 6, Malloy raped him at St. James in Stratford. The man told the diocese a year earlier and said he asked them to pay for his therapy but was only offered $5K. The man also alleged abuse by Revs. Raymond Pcolka and Joseph Murphy.

Suit filed in 2015 by a man alleging abuse by Many when he was an altar boy late 1970s-early 1980s at Sacred Heart in Groton. File in order's archives showed they knew in at least in 1976 that Many was "receiving boys in his room." Diocese and Order agreed to $900K settlement. Many denied wrongdoing. Included on the Norwich diocese's list in 2/2019. On the Edmundites list 8/7/2019. On the Burlington VT diocese's list 8/22/2019. A suit was filed in Fall 2019 claiming abuse of a boy, age 7, during confession at Sacred Heart in Groton.

Fr. Jaime Marin-Cardona

From Colombia. In 12/2019 the Diocese announced credible allegations against Marin-Cardona involving a minor. In 9/2019 the child's parents expressed concern to the Diocese. Marin-Cardona was was placed on leave and sent to an "adult facility." Charged in 1/2020 with child sexual abuse. The abuse occurred in 2014 and 2016 while Marin-Cardona was assigned to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Danbury, involving two boys. Marin-Cordona admitted to touching one of the boys on his groin multiple times over four years; his victim said the abuse started when he was age 12. The priest also admitted to touching the buttocks of the other boy. Pleaded not guilty in 2/2020. Allegations substantiated by the DCF. On the Diocese's list 1/22/2020. Pleaded guilty to revised charges. Sentenced in 10/2022 to ten years in jail, suspended after one year, and five years' probation.

"Enzo." A man filed suit in 9/2013 alleging abuse as a teenager by Marino at St. Agnes in Niantic. Marino allegedly would give the boy wine, buy him liquor, and watch porn with him before assaulting him. Plaintiff says he reported the abuse when he was in his 20s but no action was taken by the Diocese. Marino was later transferred to another parish. Excardinated in 1989. Incardinated into the Archdiocese of Siracusa, Italy. Included on the Norwich diocese's list in 2/2019.

Maslar's alleged victim said that the two met at prayer meetings at the Cathedral of St. Augustine in Bridgeport, and that the abuse happened twice in Maslar's car. The diocese was informed of the allegation in 11/2017. Maslar died in 12/21.


Fr. Richard P. McGann

Per news in 3/2011, the Hartford Archdiocese had paid an undisclosed settlement in 2009 to a man who alleged sexual abuse by McGann 1975-1977, beginning when the man was age 12. The Archdiocese said when confronted in 2011 that McGann was placed on administrative leave in 2005 without privileges. The Archdiocese was still paying a stipend to McGann. The plaintiff in the settlement was convicted in 1986 of killing his grandfather and was serving 60 years in a ME prison. McGann's name was included on the archdiocese's list 1/22/2019. It notes that he had been sentenced by the Vatican 5/24/2016 to a life of prayer and penance.

Br. K. Paul McGlade

Per news in 11/2018, McGlade was named in lawsuits filed by 24 men claiming they were sexually assaulted as 11- to 15-year-old residents of the Academy at Mount Saint John for at risk children in Deep River CT, 1986-1996. McGlade was a teacher at the school and executive director from 1990. McGlade was reportedly accused in most of the suits of sexual abuse, including masturbation, forced oral sex and sodomy. The suits also say that complaints of McGlade sexually abusing children were made to the diocese but disregarded. McGlade died in 2013. As of 12/2020 there were 35 lawsuits alleging abuse by McGlade. A plaintiffs' attorney stated that another was to be filed and that over 50 plaintiffs were expected. Also accused of abuse of boys prior his to arrival in CT.

McGrath died in 1998 at age 62 of cirrhosis and liver cancer. Included on theNorwich diocese's list 2/22/2019. Included in 3/2020 on the Salesians' list of credibly accused.

An additional suit filed in 8/2007 claimed abuse in 1974. Case settled for $785K in 2009. McSheffery died 6/15/2014. A lawsuit filed 2/27/2017 alleged abuse of altar boy at St. George's in Guilford over five years, beginning when the boy was age nine in 1977. Included on the archdiocese's list 1/22/2019.

Removed in 2013 from his assignment in Italy as a minor seminary rector after the order's North American Territory was informed that Meehan was in a "sexual relationship" in the mid-1990s, prior to ordination, with a person under age 18. Meehan's victim was under Meehan's supervision in his role as assistant formator in the LC's United States novitiate. Meehan admitted the "relationship" to his superiors in Rome yet was encouraged to pursue ordination. He left the order in 2017 to become a diocesan priest. (Not to be confused with Hartford Priest Timothy A. Meehan, ordained in 1959.)

Re-arrested in 6/2012 for possession of child porn. Pleaded guilty to all charges 5/1/2013. Privileges permanently removed. Sentenced to five years in prison and 20 years probation. Fr. Peter G. Mitchell

Information released on 9/19/2014 showed that Mitchell had been named as an abuser in a civil suit filed in 11/2012. Retired in 2001. Suit was set for trial in 11/2014. No criminal charges filed. He allegedly sexually violated a boy in the priest's car and home on Colony Road in New Haven. Mitchell died 5/20/2016. Included on the Hartford archdiocese's list 1/22/2019. On the Norwich diocese's list 2/22/2019, which notes that he was removed from ministry in 2001.

Seminarian Leonardo Montoya

From Colombia. Third-year seminary student for the Bridgeport Diocese when criminally charged with molesting a 16-year-old girl in 11/2003 while she slept. Pleaded not guilty. Immediately dismissed from seminary. The girl said he groped her during a car ride to her home and then appeared in her room twice during the night and tried to molest her. Jury found him guilty in 1/2005. Sentenced to 1 year in jail, suspended after 90 days served, and 3 years probation. Appeals Court upheld conviction in 8/2008.

Fr. Joseph P. Moore

No action for another two years. Name not revealed until 4/2002. Allegations reportedly first surfaced in 1970s. Worked outside the diocese 1983-1997. Was at Franciscan University in Steubenville OH 1986-1989. Settlements in 2001, 2003 and 2004. Laicized in 2004. Per diocesan report in 2019, Moore abused teens on camping and ski trips in the 1970s. One man alleging abuse said Moore threatened to kill him. Moore was sent to alcohol rehab then transferred to another parish. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the diocese, there were 5 victims, all males ages 8-18, abused 1972-1979.

Fr. Edward M. Moran

Reportedly in 6/2002, Moran told his parishioners that a woman had come forward in 1996 to allege that he had abused her in 1980 when she was age 7 or 8 and attending St. Brigid's Parish. There was a "full and complete" investigation by the archdiocese in 1996 which found no basis for the allegation. Moran also said there was no lawsuit or financial settlement. He denied the allegation.

In 12/2002 a man alleged that he had been abused separately by Morrissey and two other priests 1979-1983 when he was ages 15-19. All three priests were placed on leave. In 2003, allegations surfaced that $500K was missing from an authorized brokerage account at Morrissey's last church. Claims were included in a massive $21M settlement in 10/2003 with 40 people alleging abuse by 16 priests. Died 10/2/2014 in Jupiter FL, where he had been living. Five cases involving four priests, including Morrissey, were settled in 520/17. Accused in a 9/2018 suit of abuse of a boy at St. Mary's in Ridgefield in the 1990s. Settlement in 3/2019. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the diocese, there were three victims, all boys ages 12-17, abused 1981-1998.

Pastor of two Waterbury parishes since 2012 at the time of his removal: Blessed Sacrament and Shrine of St. Anne. Assigned in the past to parishes in East Haven, Meriden, Naugatuck and South Windsor. Archdiocesan investigation found allegations "unsubstantial" and cleared Murasso to return to ministry in 12/2015.

Fr. Gavin O’Connor

Two brothers filed separate suits alleging abuse by O'Connor. One settled in 1989, the other in 1998 for $200K. Bishop Egan suspended O'Connor in 1/1989 and persuaded him to leave the priesthood. Egan personally took the  laicization petition to Rome. O'Connor was removed from ministry and laicized the same year. Egan reportedly paid O'Connor around $17K - $20K to cover personal debts and living expenses when he left the priesthood. A 2019 report commissioned by the diocese states that, during 1977-1985, Gavin abused five boys ages 13-19, four of them brothers. Name included on the Belleville diocese's list 9/20/2022. Included in the 5/23/2023 IL Attorney General's Report.

The plaintiff's sister had notified the Diocese in 2003 of abuse of two other youths but did not mention her brother. Orteneau left the parish in 1994. Dismissed from the Order in 2003. Died 4/8/2009 in Huntersville, NC. Included on the Jesuits Northeast Province list of credibly accused 1/15/2019. It notes allegations received in 2005 of abuse of minors 1992-1995. On the Norwich diocese's list in 2/2019. Included on the Fall River diocese's list in 1/2021, where he had been assigned at some point to Bishop Connolly High School.

Fr. J. Lawrence Ouimet

Named publicly as accused by the diocese on its list 2/22/2019. It notes that he resigned, and was appointed in 1999 as Parochial Vicar with restricted ministry. Died 2/16/2002. Per his obituary, Ouimet worked in many parishes, and was "very active with many fire companies in the state." Suit filed in 11/2019 with claims that Ouimet plied a teenage boy with alcohol and engaged in grooming behaviors toward him sometime prior to 1988. Ouimet allegedly invited the teen to share a bed with him, talked about sex and masturbation, and disrobed and stood naked in front of the boy, demanding that he disrobe and join him in a hot tub.

Reportedly in 8/2003, a man claimed Paul molested him at age 15 for three weeks as he lay in a hospital with burns suffered in a house fire. He said he told his mom at the time but she was afraid to tell. Paul was hospital chaplain. Sources say the Archdiocese settled a similar case by another man but an Archdiocese spokesman said they "are not aware of that." Included in a 10/2005 settlement between the Archdiocese and 43 plaintiffs involving 14 priests. Two men filed suit 9/29/2008 claiming abuse by Paul at the same hospital. New suit filed in 6/2012. Included on the Archdiocese's list 1/22/2019. It notes that Paul was removed from ministry 2/21/1996, and died 7/4/2008.

Doctors were not told that a girl previously reported abuse by the priest in 1983. Named in several 1993 suits claiming abuse of 16 boys and girls. Suspended, sent for evaluation in 1993. Pcolka walked out of a psychiatric treatment center. A woman settled 2001. Many claims settled in 10/2003 $21M settlement. Laicized in 2004. Died in  11/2009. Donat Jette during confession and that Jette then abused him, too. Per the 2002 Official Catholic Directory, Petraitis was Provincial of the Marian's Office in Chicago. One article refers to him as Superior of the Marians St. Kazimierz Province in the USA, and former General of the Congregation. Denied the allegations. Died 6/12/2012. Procurator 1991-1995 of the Edmundite Generalate in VT, procurator and treasurer of St. Edmund's Retreat in Mystic CT 1995-2004. Removed from parish in Quebec in 1991 after an allegation of sexual misconduct with minors in the 1980s. Substantiated. In 1/2005 the Norwich bishop learned of allegations and asked the Order to remove him from diocese. Retired to Order's residence in FL in 2004, to Selma AL in 2013, and to VT in 2016. Died 6/12/2017. Arrested there in 1990 for abuse and child porn. Sentenced to four years' prison. Laicized. Died 1/17/2006. In 11/2006 the Norwich diocese settled a 2002 suit by one man for $1.1M. Remaining suit settled in 1/2007 for $2M. On the Las Cruces diocese's list 11/8/1208. It notes reports of abuse in 1990 and in 2016. Assigned to NMMI and Assumption parish in Roswell 1989-1990. On the Norwich diocese's list 2/22/2019; removed from ministry there in 1980. On Hartford's list 1/22/2019; NW Catholic HS faculty 1981, removed after two months. It notes that Przybylo was removed from ministry 9/22/2008 and sentenced by the Vatican on 10/21/2015 to a life of prayer and penance.

Pleaded no contest to charges of fourth-degree sexual assault and disorderly conduct in 11/1999; the plea kept him out of jail and off sex offender registry. Sentenced to one year suspended prison term, two years probation. Sent to treatment. Included on the Hartford archdiocese's list 1/22/2019. Included in 10/2021 on the Holy Name Province Franciscans' list of those against whom there are substantiated allegations.

Fr. Martin P. Ryan

Monsignor. In 2002 a woman claimed Ryan sexually abused her when she was a teenager in the 1970s. She said she told the Diocese about it but they didn't suspend him because he had an unblemished record and had not abused boys. She said there were at least two other victims. Her claim settled in 10/2003 as part of $21M settlement with 40 people. Ryan was the only active priest named in the settlement. Remained active until 5/2011 when removed for sexual harassment of an adult female. Later worked as administrator of a new parish before becoming pastor in 1/2014. In 3/2019 was pastor of Our Lady of Grace in Stratford.

Fr. John R. Sansonetti

Br. Thomas Sawyer

Educator in schools across the U.S. Was IT director for Holy Cross HS in Waterbury, living at St. John Vianney in West Hartford when another clergy member reported to police he saw images of naked children on Sawyer's computer. Order moved Sawyer to upstate NY when the police investigation started. Arrested in 4/2016, charged with possession of child pornography. Sawyer may have downloaded thousands of photos of naked children, mostly pre-teen males.

Removed from ministry in 1984, per the diocese's list 2/22/2019. Accused in 2004 of molesting at least 16 girls in 11 parishes in the diocese over 30 years. The abuse was often referred to in church records as "prolonged kissing" and not as sexual abuse. Parents would complain and Shea would be transferred. Vatican refused to laicize in 2005. Died in 2006. One woman's civil suit settled in 12/2008. Another woman's 11/2008 suit settled for $1.1M in 9/2012 just before trial was to begin. Included on the diocese's list in 2/2019.

Accused publicly In 3/2019 by a man of abusing him multiple times as a first-grader, age 6, at St. Joseph's in Norwich. She was his teacher. He said the abuse included rape, physical abuse and threats that, if he told, she could take him from his parents. He was hospitalized three times with bladder infections and genital and hip bruising. He  has hospital bills with information about the injuries. He said his parents told doctors, nurses and police that the nun abused him. The man met with Bishop Cote in 2004, who offered to settle but then did not. Cote told the man in 2006 that the nun's Order was responsible. The Diocese said it would investigate and that in 2004 it had informed law enforcement and the Dept. of Children and Families. Per the Order, Seraphia left them in 1989 and died 3/25/2012. They would not release her given name. Her accuser said she also abused at least two other students, including a girl he liked.

Deacon Matthew J. Skurat

Permanent deacon. Name included on the diocese's list 3/22/19 of clergy on whose behalf settlements were paid related to allegations of sexual abuse of minors. The allegations against Skurat were not determined to be credible. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the diocese, Skurat was accused of abuse of a boy, age 10, 1983-1991. In 2003 Skurat resigned and his faculties were removed. He was reinstated in 2004. Died 9/4/2013.

Fr. Gregory M. Smith

Monsignor. Placed on leave in 2002. Accused of becoming sexually involved with two teenage girls in the late 1960s-early 1970s. One girl told Bishop Genuario in 1969. The other filed repeated complaints with church officials over many years but nothing was done. She filed suit in 1997; dismissed due to the statute of limitations. Bishop Lori explained that he kept Smith working because the allegations involved "people who were very near attaining the age of majority... ." Per the diocese's list updated 3/22/2019, Smith had a single allegation against him.

Fr. Eugene Alphonse Solega

Died 8/18/1985. In 10/2018 a 59-year-old man told a news outlet that Solega sexually abused him when he was a 13-year-old altar boy at St. John's in Old Saybrook. Solega's accuser, along with his therapist, met with Bishop Cote in 4/2018. They said Cote apologized repeatedly. The man's therapist reportedly later asked Cote in writing for some financial help for her client who needed inpatient alcohol treatment. As of 2/2019 the bishop had not responded. Solega's name was not included on the Norwich diocese's list 2/22/2019.

Fr. John J. Stronkowski

Placed on leave in 5/2014. Per Bishop Caggiano in a letter to parishioners, leave was for "persistent absenteeism.....growing difficulties with both the staff and lay leaders and other personal and administrative shortcomings." In 6/2016 Stronkowski's name was on the diocese's list of credibly accused, noting an incident of abuse of a minor in the 1990s. Faculties removed. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the diocese there was one victim, an 11-year-old boy, abused in 1999.

Fr. Charles W. Stubbs

Stubbs was removed from his parish in 1997 because of sexual misconduct allegations. Three other men came forward after Stubbs was suspended in 1997. Still on leave per the 2002 Catholic Directory. Reportedly there were also "questions of financial impropriety." Claims settled as part of a $21M settlement in 10/2003. Laicized in  2004. Suit by plaintiffs alleging abuse in the 1970s was filed in 3/2011. A 2019 report commissioned by the diocese shows there were 18 victims, all boys ages 9-17, abused 1964-1993.

Accused in a 9/2014 lawsuit of repeated sexual assault of a 13- to 14-year-old boy 2000-2001, while associate pastor of St. John the Evangelist, Watertown, CT. Abuse was said to have occurred in Tissera's rectory bedroom, after he invited the boy for spiritual guidance and counseling. Settled in 10/2016. Laicized 5/29/2018. Priest of the Diocese of Ciudad Quesada, Costa Rica. Accused of molesting an altar boy. Treated at Casa Alberione, Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, México. Charged in Costa Rica with abuse of a child in 1994 and a became a fugitive in 1998. Fled to New York. Worked as a priest in New York and Hartford. Fled to México in 2002, then Honduras before disappearing again in March 2003, shortly before an international arrest warrant was issued for him. In 2004, a second Costa Rican youth accused Vásquez. Convicted in absentia in 2005 by a Costa Rican court and sentenced to 12 years in prison. Arrested in Honduras in 4/2007, and handed over to Interpol.

Placed on leave in 4/2002 after a woman alleged he had abused her as a minor. He admitted sexual misconduct with the then 17-year-old girl in the late 1970s. Claim(s) against Veich were settled by the diocese as part of a massive $21M settlement in 10/2003 involving 40 plaintiffs and 16 priests.

Accused in a lawsuit filed in 11/2018 of the sex abuse of a 10-year-old altar boy in 1979-1980, at Blessed Sacrament in Waterbury. Vichas' assignments included St. Joseph's in Waterbury 1952-1964, St. Casimir's in New Haven 1964-1965, St. Patrick's in Enfield 1965-1971, and Blessed Sacrament 1971-2001. Vichas retired in 2001 and died in 2008.

Named publicly as accused by the Hartford archdiocese on its list 1/22/2019. Included on the Norwich diocese's list 2/22/2019. Retired 5/31/1971. Died 1/22/1972, prior to receipt of allegations. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the diocese, there were three allegations, of abuse of boys ages 5-14, occurring 1946-1951.

Fr. Francis C. Wissel

Monsignor. Per documents released in 2009, the diocese paid two men $20K each in 2004 to settle claims of abuse in the late 1970s-early 1980s. The men claimed they were abused by Wissel and former Vicar General Genuario. The money was for therapy for three years and settlements referred to "disputed claims." Accusers had recently learned that the priests were still active. Pastor of St. Mary Parish in Greenwich and founder of a home for underprivileged boys in Bridgeport. Both priests denied the allegations. Per a 2019 report commissioned by the diocese, there were allegations that Wissel abused three boys, ages 12 and 13, in 1979, 1982 and 1985. The diocese did not determine the allegations to be credible. Wissel died 6/19/2014.

Fr. Peter J. Zizka

Two suits filed in 1995 alleged abuse by Zizka in the 1970s while the female plaintiffs were children. Files in the suits were sealed until 1998. Another suit was filed in 7/1997. Zizka was not removed from his assignment until 1999. All three cases settled and the files were again sealed. By 10/2002 a total of five lawsuits had been filed against Zizka. All settled. Per the archdiocese on its list 1/22/2019, Zizka was laicized in 2002.
