A 6/2009 lawsuit against the Baltimore Archdiocese filed in DE alleged Barnes molested a boy 1977-1982 while at St. Clare School in Essex. The abuse occurred in the rectory and on out of state trips, and involved alcohol. Baltimore contacted plaintiff in 2002 after a review of files; he denied abuse. Pleaded no contest in 6/2010. Sentenced to six months in jail. Civil case settled in 8/2010 for $50K. Laicized in 2013. Died in 2017. Included in the 4/5/2023 MD Attorney General's Report. The woman's husband told the A.G. in 2021 that the Archdiocese sent a "monk" to speak to his wife, who told her "it would cost the Archdiocese money." Fr. Frederick H. Duke

Ordained: 1942
Status: Accused

Died: 02/17/1992
Diocese: Archdiocese of Baltimore MD

Monsignor. In 1988, the Archdiocese received an allegation against Duke of sexual abuse of a boy during 7th and 8th grades in 1953-1954. This victim received a $25K settlement from Duke. Duke admitted in 1988 to sexually abusing 26 children 1944 -1961, seven of whom later came forward. The abuse included oral and anal rape. Many victims told other priests and/or church authorities, to no avail. In one case, Fr. John Tierney did speak to Duke in the early 1950s, and the abuse of that victim stopped. One man said in 1993 that he was abused over two years in the 1940s, beginning at age 10; he told another priest in confession, who swore him to secrecy. (The priest, Joseph Kenney, was later credibly accused of child sexual abuse.) Duke also sent other victims to confession. The Archdiocese knew Duke was sexually abusing boys as early as 1953 and was sent for 'spiritual direction.' He died in 1992. After his father died at age 43, the man, then age 14, took a night receptionist job at St. Mary's, where he met and was abused by Haight in 1974. LaPorta was named on the 9/25/2002 Baltimore Archdiocese list as having been credibly accused by one person in 1999 of sexual abuse in the 1960s. Faculties removed. He denied abuse. The list shows LaPorta had recently retired when the allegation was made. The 1999 Official Catholic Directory is first that reports him as retired and also lists him as monsignor. Later Directories show him retired in Little River SC, not a monsignor, and pastor emeritus at St. Mark's in Catonsville; five other priests who worked there are also accused. Fr. E. Neil Magnus

Ordained: 1963
Status: Accused

Died: 11/27/1988
Diocese: Archdiocese of Baltimore MD

Parish priest. Teacher/counselor/chaplain at five different high schools. In residence at one, principal of another. Tribunal member. In 2016 a woman received "acknowledgment of crimes" and financial assistance for counseling from the Archdiocese due to her claims of rape by Magnus and another priest, Joseph Maskell. Magnus was Keough High School's Religious Services Director, Maskell was chaplain. Both priests were counselors. Per the woman they raped her at a CYO picnic in 9/1970, when she was age 14 and a new Keough student. She said Magnus showed up in a police car and that the rape occurred after she was given a drink that weakened her. She said Maskell watched, then also raped her, and that his assaults continued through her high school years. She claimed, too, that on one occasion a Baltimore police officer joined Maskell and, after paying the priest, raped her. Magnus and Maskell have been accused by other former students. Both men have been implicated in the unsolved 1969 murder of Sr. Cathy Cesnik, to whom girls had confided abuse. Included on the archdiocese's list 12/14/2018. Included in the 4/5/2023 MD Attorney General's Report. It shows that the Archdiocese received a report from a woman in 1992 of sexual abuse by Magnus and Maskell over several years in the late 1960s, when she was a Keough student. The AG Report details abuse of 7 girls by Magnus, one as young as age 11. Several reported the presence of a police officer during some of the abuse, as well as rape by a police officer. One said the abuse by Magnus included rape with a crucifix. Another victim described Magnus as "sadistic and evil." There are indications in Magnus' personnel file that Archdiocesan officials new of problems with Magnus, yet kept him in ministry and appointed him as principal of high schools. Magnus died 11/27/1988.

Status: Convicted

Diocese: Archdiocese of Baltimore MD

In 1987 the mothers of two teenage boys, who were cousins, reported to the Archdiocese that the boys had recently suffered physical and sexual abuse by Mike. Faculties removed. Criminally charged for whipping a 17-year-old youth, hanging the youth upside down from a basketball backboard and striking him on the buttocks with a table tennis paddle. Mike admitted to Archdiocesan officials and lawyers to abusing the two boys, and to similar abuse of a boy at his previous parish. He said he told later credibly accused priest Joseph Maskell and a doctor, who kept it quiet. Sent to CT for treatment in 5/1987, diagnosed with "sexual sadism." Another parent reported in 6/1987 likely abuse of their son, which the Archdiocese said was not reportable to police. This victim said in 2004 that Mike called him after his arrest and said not to anyone about the abuse because he was already in "big trouble." Pleaded guilty in 9/1987. Sentenced to five years of supervised probation. In 10/1987 allowed parish ministry in CT. The Archdiocese tried to have him assigned in the Diocese of Erie, saying he could return to ministry in Baltimore after three years. The statute of limitations in MD at the time was three years from the age of maturity; Bishop Malooly said "we need to walk on eggshells until the early 1990s." Mike did not end up going to Erie. Included in the 4/5/2023 MD Attorney General's Report, noting that at least seven victims had come forward, all boys ages 13-17 when abused. Almost all reported that Mike perpetrated sadistic physical abuse against them for his own sexual gratification. Archdiocesan files show concern by officials only for the reputation of the church and Fr. Mike's wellbeing, and no concern about child protection. Mike did not return to active ministry.

Ordained: 1962
Status: Charged

Died: 09/30/2005
Diocese: Archdiocese of Baltimore MD

Banned from St. Mark's Summer Camp as a seminarian in the 1950s for "some form of sexual problem." Ordained in 1962. Removed from parish work in 1985 after complaints of inappropriate behavior with altar boys. Two separate civil suits filed in 1988 accused Simms of forcing altar boys to dress in skimpy, sexually provocative briefs, act out religious fantasies and wrestle with him. One suit claimed abuse in 1982, the other in 1984-1985. Both cases settled in 1989 or 1990. Police investigated in 1985 but agreed not to press charges if Simms received counseling and was removed from contact with minors. Received treatment at St. Luke Institute. Assigned in 4/1986 to a hospital chaplaincy. Allowed to serve on the Archdiocesan Tribunal and to assist with weekend parish ministry. Parishioners were not informed of Simms' abuse history. In 1988 the Archdiocese acknowledged that Simms molested boys, saying there were "only two" victims. Report in 1994 of abuse of a 10-year-old altar boy in the 1970s at St. Ursula in Parkville. Report in 1997 of abuse of a boy at St. Joseph's in Cockeysville, where Simms was assigned 1966-1971. Criminally charged in 1997 by the State's Attorney's Office; the case was "stetted" in 1998. In 11/2002 four brothers reported inappropriate behavior toward them by Simms when they were children in the 1980s, and that Simms sexually abused at least two of them. Report in 2016 of abuse of a boy in 1985, and that two priests sent in 1985 to interview the boy deemed the allegations unfounded because the boy was afraid and ran away, refusing the interview. By 2021 three more men reported abuse as children by Simms. Included in the 4/5/2023 MD Attorney General's Report. Died in 9/2005.
