Fr. G. Barry Ashwell

Accused in lawsuits of sexually abusing boys at St. Augustine's in Oak Harbor, where he was assigned 1978-2000. Ashwell was a state-licensed foster father and some of the the boys alleging abuse were living him as foster children. The Archdiocese settled with one in 1996. Allowed to stay in ministry. Accused in a 2001 lawsuit of sexually abusing an altar boy in the 1970s at St. Joseph's in Vancouver. Placed on leave. Three other men filed suit in 7/2005. Laicized in 2005. New suit filed 8/30/2010. By 2010 there were five known accusers. Included on the Archdiocese's list of credibly accused 1/15/2016. Settlement in 2022 related to sexual abuse occurring in about 1976 at St. Vincent de Paul in Federal Way. Ashwell died 3/27/2020.

Fr. Englebert M. Axer

In 11/2006, Seattle University announced that it had received a report that Axer sexually abused a minor in 1956.  Professor at Seattle University 1956-1987. Worked in Japan 1950-1955. Died 9/27/1989.  At some point, the University removed his name from an endowed chair in the philosophy department because of the abuse. There was  least one settlement as of 11/2007. Name included on the Seattle archdiocese's list 1/15/2016. On the Jesuits West Province list 12/7/2018.

Fr. Reinard Beaver

A civil suit filed by a man in 5/2003 alleged abuse when he was a boy in 1956 during a trip to Seattle. Another suit filed by a male plaintiff in 6/2003 alleged abuse in 1957. Abuse allegedly occurred at the Fairchild Air Force Base swimming pool where Beaver had privileges as an Army Reservist. Two more suits were filed in 12/2004 and 7/2005. Beaver was removed from ministry in 1983, retired in 1984. Privileges removed in 2002. Name included on the Archdiocese of Seattle's 1/15/2016 list of clergy and religious with established, admitted or credible allegations against them of sexual abuse of a minor (first name spelled Reinart). Assigned 1976-1980 to Fort Lewis Chaplain's Office and 1981-1983 to Madigan General Hospital.

Fr. Garry Boulden

A woman filed suit in 2004 alleging that Boulden molested her beginning when she was age 12 and a student at a Spokane parish school in the 1970s and 1980s. The parish pastor was reportedly informed at the time, and his response was to blame the girl and ask why she was threatening the career of a "fine young priest." Boulden denied the allegations. He moved to Seattle in 1983, doing occasional parish ministry. He was working in 1987 for the Mayor's Office for Senior Services and was hired in 1989 by the Police Department. Removed from ministry in 2002. Seattle Police knew of allegations by 2003. Per Spokane's bishop Skylstad in 11/2007, the allegations were credible. Name included on the Archdiocese of Seattle's 1/15/2016 list (first name spelled Gary.) Placed on leave by the Seattle Police Department in 2/2020 after public pressure. Seattle's list in 3/2023 notes that Boulden was laicized.

Convicted in 1987 of lewdness with a child in Reno, NV. Sued in 2003. Accused of abuse in the 1960s in Portland. In 2005 three siblings (two girls and a boy) settled claims against the Seattle archdiocese for $1.1M. Other claims were still pending. Accused of molesting at least 9 boys and girls in OR, WA, and NV. Died 2/12/1995. One claim settled in Seattle in 10/2007 for $270K. Four others settled in 2009. Included on the archdiocese's list 1/15/2016 of clergy and religious for whom allegations of sexual abuse of a minor have been admitted, established or determined to be credible. Fr. Edward C. Boyle

Died in 12/1987. Accused in a 2005 lawsuit of sexually abusing a boy for over ten years, beginning in 1956. Name included on the Seattle archdiocese's list released 1/15/2016 of clergy and religious for whom allegations of sexual abuse of a minor have been admitted, established or determined to be credible. Worked in the archdiocese 1940-1987, in Kenmore, Longview, Everett, Arlington, Sedro-Woolley, Bremerton, Renton, Seattle, and Bellevue. Accused in a lawsuit filed in 7/2024 of sexually abusing a boy in the 1980s at St. John Catholic School. The plaintiff also claimed he was abused by two of his coaches at the school, John Schade and Terry McGrath. Another lawsuit was filed 9/9/2024 alleging abuse by Boyle of a boy 1983 through 1984 at St. John's.

Named publicly as accused on the Santa Barbara Province Franciscans list 5/31/2019. It notes an allegation of abuse 1974-1976 received in 2007. Assigned at the time of the alleged abuse to St. Francis in Spokane. Bradley left the Franciscans in 1979 and was incardinated into the Diocese of Orange, where he was assigned to parishes in Anaheim, Garden Grove, Dana Point and Capistrano Beach. He was also a member of the diocese's Council of Priests. Retired in 2004. Died in 2020.

Fr. Theodore F. Xavier Bradley

In a 1994 lawsuit a woman accused Bradley of using premarital counseling to break up her engagement and start an affair with her. She was 17 when the counseling started. The woman won a settlement. Bradley "retired" in 1995 but apparently was allowed to return to limited ministry. Placed on leave in 2002. Another woman filed suit in 5/2004 alleging that she was sexually abused at age 5 by Bradley in 1969-1970. In 4/2007 he reportedly would continue to draw a pension from the Diocese. No privileges. He died in 1/2023, at age 96.

Fr. Christopher Breen

From Ireland. Arrived in Yakima in 1960, immediately after ordination. A woman filed a civil suit in 9/2008 alleging that Breen abused her 1968-1972, when she was in her teens and a parishioner of St. Paul Cathedral. She had gone to Breen for counseling. He also taught at the diocesan high school. Took a leave of absence in the 1970s, never returned. Married in 1976. Suit settled in 3/2011 for $287.5K. Named in a second suit in 11/2010 as having knowledge of abuse by Rev. Sean Dolan and doing nothing. On the diocese's list 7/9/2019. It notes multiple claims and lawsuits settled. Died in 2023.

Burris' name is included on this list without any additional information on claims against him. Worked in the San Francisco, Seattle, and Spokane dioceses. On the Jesuit West Province list 12/7/2018 (name misspelled "Burrus"). It notes alleged abuse occurring in 1944 or 1945, reported in 2009. Assigned at the time of the alleged abuse to St. Mary's Mission in Omak, WA. May have been dismissed around 1950.

In a civil suit filed 8/26/2010, one of three plaintiffs alleged that he was groomed and sexually abused by Casale in 1955 at Briscoe Memorial School in Kent. Fr. Dennis Champagne

Removed from ministry in 6/2002 after a man told the archdiocese that Champagne abused him as a boy in 1979. The alleged victim told another priest, who in 1986 informed Archbishop Hunthausen that Champagne had "momentarily" molested a boy once in 1979. No action. The Vatican permanently removed Champagne from public ministry in 9/2006, giving him "a life of prayer and penance." On archdiocese's list of credibly accused in 1/15/2016. Worked in Kenmore, Seahurst, Seattle, Tacoma, Snohomish and Lakewood. In 1/2020 the archdiocese settled for $1.7M with someone claiming abuse in the 1980s. Another settlement 7/16/2020.

Fr. Michael J. Cody

Admitted in 1988 to sexually abusing about 20-40 prepubescent girls and 1 boy, most recently several years prior. His personnel file shows multiple male victims. The Seattle archdiocese was informed in 1962 that Cody had molested at least 8 girls and was sent to Institute of Living in CT for treatment. Assigned to 6 parishes during the next 15 years, 1964-1979, then put on leave as unassignable. Moved to FL in 1988. Sought ministry in the Orlando diocese; faculties denied by Seattle. He proposed laicization but Seattle did not pursue. Moved to the Las Vegas NV area. On recommendation of the Review Board, laicized in 2005. One suit settled for $1.2M on 5/17/2015 during trial. The Archdiocese settled with 8 women for $9.1M as announced 3/23/2016. Of them, Cody abused 6 when assigned to a Burlington WA parish 1968-1972, and 2 while assigned in Bellingham 1972-1975. He died in 2015. Included on archdiocese's list 1/15/2016. Another settlement was announced by the Seattle archdiocese 11/2018.


Fr. Paul Joseph Conn

In 5/1988 Conn was charged with five felony counts of indecent liberties with minors. In 7/1988 he pleaded guilty to molesting six boys ages 11-13. Admitted to abuse of others police did not know about. Sentenced to four years in prison. Released from prison in 6/1991, required to register as a sex offender. Former supervising priest of another abuser, James McGreal. Civil suit settled with archdiocese in 1996. Laicized. Included on archdiocese's 1/15/2016 list. Another settled suit announced 11/2018. Included on the Santa Barbara Province Franciscans list. It notes that Conn was a pre-novitiate candidate at St. Anthony Seminary, and left in 1980 to become a diocesan priest. Settlement 11/19/2020 in the 1988 case. Another settlement announced in 4/2022.


Br. Berard William Connolly

Franciscan brother. Died in 1999. Lawsuit filed in 1993 by a woman alleging abuse in the early 1970s in the Spokane diocese, when she was a Marycliff High School student. Connolly was sent to therapy. Transferred to CA. Accused of abuse 1985-1987 at St. Anthony Seminary in the Los Angeles archdiocese. Settlement of suit in that case announced 8/10/2006. Name has been spelled both Connelly and Connolly, Berard and Bernard. Personnel file released in 5/2012. Included on the Oakland diocese's list 6/1/2019. On the Santa Barbara Province Franciscans list 5/31/2019, which notes alleged sex abuse of minors 1960-1963, 1982-1984 reported in 1993, 2003, 2004, 2014. Worked in the Seattle archdiocese 1975-2002. Adopted several youths. Accused by at least 20 of them of abuse when they were minors in the 1970s-1980s. Laicized in 2004. In 2006 two brothers settled with the archdiocese for $1M. Several other cases pending at the time. Included on archdiocese's list released 1/15/2016 of clergy or religious with admitted, established or credible allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. On the Boise diocese's list in 10/2019. Settlement in 2022. Per Seattle's list in 3/2023, Cornelius is deceased.

Br. Edward C. Courtney

Accused of abuse of at least 55 boys. Order knew in 1960s about abuse yet allowed Courtney to teach in IL, MI, NV, NY and WA. Removed from Order in 1983. Worked in public schools in WA until accusations surfaced. Pleaded guilty 1988 in WA to indecent liberties; got two-years' probation. Five plaintiffs settled for $1.9M in 2/2007. Suit filed 2006 for abuse in 1980 at St. Alphonsus School in Seattle and at O'Dea; settled for $1.1M in Fall 2007. Suits filed in 3/2009, 11/22/2011 (7 claims) and 3/2013 (15 claims). Order agreed to $16.5M settlement with 400 plaintiffs for abuse by multiple order brothers in 5/2013. Allegations against Courtney by 52 of 400 claimants. Listed by the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers in 2014 as accused by at least two persons in claims settled in bankruptcy proceedings. On 6/25/2014, Archdiocese announced $12.1M settlement of 30 claims against order, Archdiocese, Briscoe School and Seattle's Bishop O'Dea High School. Eleven were claims of abuse by Courtney. Sr. Dolores Crosby

Crosby entered the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (SNJM) in 1952. She was an elementary school principal for 30 years, working in Spokane, Edmonds, Tacoma, Seattle and Everett. In 1999 she surrendered her teaching credentials after an allegation surfaced against her of sexual abuse in the 1980s.  She died in 7/2007. Her name was included on the archdiocese's list 1/15/2016 of clergy and religious with established, admitted or credible accusations against them of sexual abuse of a minor. In 7/2021 the archdiocese announced that it had settled two cases with claims of sexual abuse by Crosby in the 1980s, while she was principal of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School in Seattle. 


Deacon Robert Davalle

Ordained a permanent deacon in 1986, assigned to Christ the King in Richland. Volunteer with middle and high school students at the parish beginning 1978. In 6/2017 a 15-year-old girl told her youth group leader that Davalle molested her when she was younger. Davalle was arrested 6/27/2017, and charged with molesting the girl and her sister 8 or 9 years prior, when they were ages 8-12. Davalle admitted to the abuse, and said he sexually assaulted another girl, about age 10. Pleaded guilty in 5/2018. Sentenced in 9/2018 to a minimum of more than five years in prison. Included on the diocese's list 7/9/2019. It notes the abuse was in "non-ministerial settings."

Two women filed suit in 11/2010 alleging abuse by Dolan between 1967 and 1975 at St. Paul Cathedral when they were about 16 years old. Both had gone to Dolan for counseling. He died in 2007. The suit also named the parish pastor, Rev. Christopher Breen - also later accused - as having known of the abuse and doing nothing. Included on the diocese's list 7/9/2019. It notes multiple claims and lawsuits settled.

Sued in 2002 by a woman who alleged he began an improper relationship with her when she was 15 and he was nearly 60. She attended a horse camp he ran on Kalispel Indian Reservation and said his involvement progressed from innocuous physical contact to wrestling to overt sexual activity. Relationship continued into her adulthood. He died in 2005. Diocese said in 2007 that the allegation was credible.

Civil suit filed in Seattle in 1/2004 by three plaintiffs alleging sexual and physical abuse by seven members of the Congregation of Christian Brothers, including Duffy, at Briscoe Memorial School for Boys in Kent WA in the 1940s-1960s. The school, closed in 1970, was owned by the archdiocese and run by the order. Other men have come forward with stories of their own to support these allegations, including one who filed suit in 1/2008. Claims settled in 11/2008 and 1/2009. Two separate suits were filed by a man against the order and archdiocese. The first suit alleged abuse by Dwyer at Briscoe Memorial School in the 1940s. It settled for a lesser sum when order said Dwyer never worked at the school. The second was filed in 2009 after an archive from Rome showed Dwyer had been expelled from the order in 1947 following an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse. The list shows Dwyer worked at Briscoe Memorial in the 1940s.

Fr. Leonard L. Feeney

A civil suit filed in 1/2008 alleged Feeney abused a boy in the 1950s at St. Martin's High School in Lacey. The abuse allegedly lasted two years when the boy was in 9th and 10th grades. The same plaintiff also alleged abuse by two Christian Brothers at Briscoe School in Kent when he was in 7th grade. A second suit filed 5/28/2008 by three more plaintiffs alleged abuse by Feeney in the mid-late 1950s. Feeney died in 1980. A woman settled claim with the archdiocese in 2004, alleging Gandrau abused her 30 years prior when she was about 16. Included on archdiocese's list 1/15/2016 of clergy with admitted, established or credible allegations against them of sexual abuse of a minor. Gandrau died in 2012. New suit filed vs the archdiocese 5/17/2016, claiming cover-up of alleged sexual abuse of a boy in 1967 at St. Mark's in Shoreline. The suit says Gandrau was caught with the boy by pastor Rev. Theodore Sullivan, who did not report it.

From Guadalajara ,Mexico, ordained in Yakima. Removed from public ministry 5/5/2017, as reported by the Diocese 6//12/2017, for the "forcible fondling" of a teenage boy five or six years prior. Church deemed allegation credible. Gomez Santos denied the allegation, but admitted to giving alcohol, massages and gifts to minors, including trips to Disneyland. He also allowed teens to sleep over in his parish residences. Said by the Diocese to be living in a supervised setting. No criminal charges due to a three-year statute of limitations in WA. Lawsuit v Diocese filed in 10/2017 alleging abuse of a teenage boy at St. Juan Diego parish in Cowiche in 2012. On the Diocese's list 7/9/2019, which notes laicization process underway. Per the list updated in 2023, the 2017 lawsuit was settled in 2022 and Gomez was laicized.

Assigned in Waterville, Chelan, East Wenatchee and Leavenworth 1958-1979. Lawsuit filed in 3/2010 alleged Graaff abused a girl, ages 9-11, in 1972-1974, while he was assigned to St. Joseph's in Waterville. He died in 1990. The suit was dismissed 2/6/2013 after the Diocese argued there was "insufficient evidence to allow the claim to go to trial." On the Diocese's list 7/9/2019, which notes a small settlement in lieu of appeal.

After investigating, the Vatican authorized Gregoire's return to active status in 8/2003. Died in 12/2022.

Hagel's accuser said the abuse began when he was age 10, and that it included being forced into sex acts with other boys. On the diocese's list 7/9/2019. It notes a civil investigation in 1980 that did not result in charges and a lawsuit was pending in a new case. Retired, no active ministry. The Diocese's list in 11/2021 notes that the lawsuit settled, the abuse was not substantiated and Hagel is deceased.

Fr. David Peter Jaeger

As part of 1996 or 1997 lawsuit against Conn, Jaeger himself admitted to improperly touching 8-10 boys at a CYO camp in the 1970s. In 1988 the archdiocese settled with one victim. Restricted from working 1:1 with minors in 1989 and sent for treatment. Another claim settled 12/2004. Voluntarily laicized in 11/2005. Died 07/22/2014. Buried with full rites. On the archdiocese's list 1/15/2016. Named in suit filed 5/17/2016. Settlement 3/23/2021 of claims of abuse in 1979 while in residence at Sacred Heart in Seattle.

Retired by 1984. A man told the Archdiocese and the Order in 1989 that Kealy, a teacher at Bishop O'Dea High School in Seattle, had physically accosted him "in a sexual manner" in the early 1960s. The Order said Kealy was living in a supervised, church-run retirement facility in Ireland with no access to children. The same man filed suit in 2003. Kealy died 10/22/1996. Named in a new 11/22/2011 suit by 6 of 7 plaintiffs. On 6/25/2014 the Archdiocese announced a $12.1M settlement of 30 claims against the Order and the Archdiocese, Briscoe School in Kent Valley and Seattle's Bishop O'Dea High School. Five of the claims involved abuse by "Feely Kealy." Name included on the Archdiocese's list 1/15/2016 of clergy and religious with admitted, established or credible allegations against them of sexual abuse of a minor. The Diocese acknowledged in 12/03 that there were credible accusations against Knecht. Seven plaintiffs filed civil suit(s) in 1/04 claiming abuse by Knecht at St. Mary's Catholic School in Chewelah. In 4/04, another man filed suit against the Diocese, alleging that he was abused by Knecht as a minor for about three years. Knecht worked in the Diocese from 1932 until he died in 1956 at age 56. He spent almost 20 years at Chewelah. One claim settled in 12/04. Others pending in 4/06.

Died in 2003. The Archdiocese said he was 1 of 49 priests included in a 2004 investigation. One claim settled in Seattle in 10/2007 for $110K. A second claim settled in 8/2009 for $350K. In 11/09 the ranch transferred the bulk of its assets to the nonprofit Morning Star Foundation which would complicate any possible settlements or judgments. Judgment for defendants in 2/10. In 11/06 a woman sued Marier and Bishop William Skylstad over allegations that the priest possessed child pornography. The woman said she found the porn in 1996 while cleaning the priest's room and told the Bishop. Marier denied that it was child porn. Sent for treatment. Later reassigned. The woman said in the suit that the bishop defamed her by publicly issuing a strongly-worded press release that supported Marier. Court dismissed the lawsuit in 3/07.

Marsh resigned from active priesthood in late 1988. He admitted to molesting about 10 boys. Named in a 2002 civil suit by three brothers and their mother. The brothers accused him of abuse between 1969-1973. Settled in  12/2003 for $425K. The youngest brother of the three original plaintiffs filed his own suit in late 1/2005. Marsh may have been laicized in 1989. He was deposed in the Fr. Paul Conn case, who pleaded guilty in 1988 to abuse of boys. Named in new suit in 6/2011. Most of his career was spent at Bellarmine Preparatory High School in Tacoma, WA. During the late 1940s through the 1950s he was assigned to St. Mary's Indian Mission in Omak, WA, which was part of the Spokane diocese. Included on the Jesuits West list 12/7/2018. It notes claims in 2009 of abuse 1948-1953, 1953-1960 and 1959-1965.

Fr. James McGreal

Admitted to molesting hundreds of boys. It was revealed in 1988 that McGreal had a history of abuse (known by the Archdiocese) going back 40 years to ordination. Was moved many times and sent for treatment. Supervised for a time by another abuser, Fr. Paul Conn. A 1994 lawsuit settled and sealed. In 5/2002 sixteen new plaintiffs filed four suits. The Archdiocese settled 15 claims in 9/2003 for $7.87M. A final one settled in 4/2004. In 11/2006 three more cases settled for $1.25M. The Vatican decreed permanent suspension in 3/2004. Joseph Mpingajira of the Republic of Malawi in southeast Africa, notorious for sexual involvement with married women.

Fr. Arthur C. Mertens

The bishop announced in 2002 that Mertens had been credibly accused of sexually abusing minors and had been removed from ministry in 1989. One man filed suit in 7/04, alleging abuse by Mertens in the 1980s in several locations. A priest complained about Mertens in 1984 or '85. Another claim settled in 1994. Mertens also abused in Guatemala between 1961-1977. Reportedly in 4/07 Mertens was to continue to draw a pension. No privileges.

Fr. James Mitchell

Ordained in Colombia. Brought two impoverished teen boys from Colombia to live with him at St. John's in Seattle where he worked 1985-1986. Promised them US citizenship via adoption, then allegedly sexually abused them for years. One of them filed a civil suit in 2004. The Archdiocese knew of Mitchell's history in 1986 or 1987 but did nothing legally because the abuse was thought to have occurred only in Colombia. A woman filed suit in 1/2004 alleging sexual abuse by O'Grady at Jesuit House in Spokane when she was 12. O'Grady was providing supply work to parishes in Spokane at that time. He died 06/16/1993. The suit names the Jesuits' Portland Province and Bishop Syklstad. Settled in 12/2004. The Diocese said allegations were proven or credible. Included on the Boise diocese's list in 10/2019. It notes incidents in 1984 and 1985 while assigned to Sacred Heart in Boise, reported in 2003. Perry's name was added in 7/2020 by the Jesuits West Province to its list of credibly accused. He was permanently removed from public ministry and was to remain at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center under a safety plan.

Pierre's name is included on this list. On the Jesuits West Province list 12/7/2018. It notes claims in 2009 of abuse 1962-1965. Pierre was assigned to Mount St. Michael's in Spokane, WA during the years of the alleged abuse. He died 8/17/1979.

Fr. Harold F. Quigg

Allegation in the late 1990s. Settled. Kept in ministry. The Review Board Report of 6/2004 identified Quigg as one of four priests for whom there was insufficient evident to support an allegation of abuse of a minor. The Board admitted that there was sufficient evidence to prove he did sexually abuse a 17-year-old; church age of consent at the time was 16. The Board stated Quigg's actions were so egregious that he was unsuitable for the priesthood. Supposedly removed from ministry, but the Archdiocese admitted that he continued to perform baptisms and other services and priestly duties at local parishes. Laicization reported in a 7/5/2015 church bulletin. Died in 11/2015. Name included on Archdiocese's 1/15/2016 list of clergy and religious with established, admitted or credible accusations against them of sexual abuse of a minor. Named in suit filed 5/17/2016.

Deacon Aaron Ramirez

Member of the Sons of the Holy Family in Mexico when was asked to leave and denied reinstatement in 1996. Arrived in WA in 1998. Working as a deacon in the Diocese of Yakima in 1999 when accused of inviting a 17-year-old boy to spend the evening with him at a church trailer home. The boy passed out on the porch after Ramirez gave him alcohol, and woke up nude on a bed with the nude deacon lying beside him. Admitted the abuse. Police informed. Ramirez fled to Mexico before the diocese or police could investigate. Laicized in 2000. Later became an Episcopal priest outside of Mexico City. Dismissed after publicity about the U.S. abuse. Civil suit filed in 7/2011. Federal trial underway in 3/2014. Judge ruled 6/12/2014 that the diocese was not responsible. This decision was made despite the fact that no personnel file for the deacon could be located in diocesan files. On the diocese's list 7/9/2019.

Fr. Hilario Ramirez

Visiting priest from the Mexico, possibly the Archdiocese of Mexico City. Spent several weeks at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Moses Lake WA and Queen of All Saints in Warden WA in the early 1970s, as well as at St. Joseph's in Dilley TX in the 1970s. The Archdiocese of San Antonio stated that Ramirez had never had an assignment or faculties to minister there. Returned to Mexico and is believed to have died in auto accident in the early 1980s. As of 12/2012, he had been accused of abusing at least four boys between the ages of 7 and 14. Two of the accusers were offered counseling. Two others are deceased. Parishioners were informed 12/16/2012, but authorities had known for months. On the Yakima diocese's list 7/9/2019. It notes a first victim was provided counseling, and a second given a financial settlement.

Fr. Edward Receconi

Accused in a 1994 civil lawsuit of abusing a 15-year-old boy in 1980 at a parish school. The suit claims Fr. Dale Calhoun also abused the youth. Removed from a parish in the Yakima diocese in 1988 and sent to treatment. Later moved to Hereford TX. Working in Amarillo TX 1989-3/2002 when he resigned. At least two claims settled confidentially. A Seattle priest stated publicly in 2004 that Scully abused him in the 1970s when he was 15; reported to the Church in 2003. Name included on the Seattle archdiocese's list 1/15/2016. Accused in a 4/2019 suit, along with three other priests, of abuse of a Yakima boy in the 1970s and 1980s at St. Andrew's parish and at a YMCA building used by the diocese. This accuser said the abuse began when he was age 10, and that it included being forced into sex acts with other boys. Laicized. Included on Yakima's list 7/9/2019. A 2020 lawsuit settled, per the diocese's list updated in 11/2021, and the abuse was not substantiated. Per the list updated 3/15/2023, Scully is deceased.

Fr. Michael J. Simpson

From Ireland. A woman filed suit 2005 accusing Simpson of abuse of several girls in early 1960s. Three more women filed suits in 6/2006 claiming abuse as young girls. Diocese settled four cases in 1/2008 for $200K. Simpson was known as a chronic alcoholic and had to sign a sobriety oath before working in the diocese. He died in Ireland in 1977. New suit in 9/2018 alleges Simpson and another (unnamed) priest sexually abused a girl for ten years, beginning when she was age five, in the late 1950s into the 1960s at St. Aloysius in Toppenish. She said the abuse by Simpson began when he replaced the other priest around 1960, and she was in about third grade. The abuse allegedly included rape, resulted in a miscarried pregnancy when the girl was 12, and ended when he left the parish when she was 14 . On the diocese's list 7/9/2019. Per the diocese's list updated in 11/2021, a 2019 lawsuit settled and the abuse was not substantiated.

Bishop William Skylstad

Fr. Joseph Sondergeld

Monsignor. Seattle priest until Yakima diocese formed in 1951. Per 6/2003 news articles, Sondergeld was accused of abusing at least three minors. One man filed suit in 2003 alleging abuse in Yakima 1967-1968, and that Sondergeld would give him money after each act. The Diocese claimed Sondergeld, then in his 80s, was senile. Two other men came forward to claim abuse in the 1940s in Spokane. Songergeld died in 1969. A new lawsuit was filed 7/1/2013 against Yakima and Seattle. Included on the Yakima diocese's list 7/9/2019, which  notes multiple claims and lawsuits settled. One victim stated in 2022 that Sondergeld abused at least 35 in the Spokane diocese and at least 11 in Yakima.

Tholen retired the same year, for medical reasons. In 1999, a brother of the original complainant filed a civil suit claiming abuse by Tholen when he was a minor. Settled in 2000. Tholen died in 1/2012. Included on the Diocese's list 7/9/2019.

Fr. James Toner

Died in 1957, age 78. Civil suit filed by three men 8/26/2010 claimed abuse at Briscoe Memorial School, including an allegation that Toner abused a boy there in 1944. The youth allegedly fled the school and reported the abuse to the Archdiocese in the same year, but no action. Toner was at St. Benedict's Mission (later called Our Lady Queen of Heaven) in Tacoma 1939-1946. His ordination date is unclear; he arrived in WA state in 1925 from Vancouver. Reportedly in 5/07, Vevik, an active priest of the Spokane Diocese, was named in bankruptcy claims as having "assaulted a person in a restroom of Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral in 1978." Deceased. A civil suit filed in Seattle in 1/2004 by three plaintiffs alleged extensive sexual and physical abuse by seven members of the Irish Christian Brothers, including Br. Warren, at the Briscoe Memorial School for Boys in Kent WA in the 1940s-1960s and at O'Dea High School. Briscoe was owned by the Archdiocese and run by the Order. Other men have come forward with stories of their own to support these allegations. Name included on the Order's list of former and deceased brothers with at least two claims of sexual abuse against them, as required by its bankruptcy settlement in 2014.  Name also on the Seattle Archdiocese's list 1/15/2016 of clergy and religious with admitted, established or credible allegations against them of sexual abuse of a minor. Worked at Briscoe Memorial 1931-1944.

Deacon Wynn Webster

Wynn, a deacon serving in Brewster and Twisp, was removed from ministry in 7/03 after allegations that he violated Church guidelines for ministers in their interactions with minors. An unspecified incident involved a teenage girl. Police interviewed the girl who made the allegations but decided to drop charges because Webster did not violate any criminal laws. Review Board recommended his removal from the diaconate.

Fr. Joseph Weitensteiner

Accused in 2005 of abuse of two boys in the 1970s and '80s at Morning Star Boys Ranch. Resigned as head of the Ranch in 4/06. Denied all allegations. Reportedly took a lie detector test and passed. Abuse alleged by 19 plaintiffs against Weitensteiner, Marvin Lavoy and others at the Ranch. In 11/09 Ranch transferred bulk of assets to nonprofit Morning Star Foundation. Jury decided in favor of defendant 2/11/10. Some plaintiffs received settlement from the Diocese earlier. A second trial was set for 6/10. Settlements in 5/12. Reinstated in 4/15 after each claim was denied or deemed non-credible by a retired federal judge hired by the Diocese.

Fr. Daniel Wetzler

Diocese: Diocese of Spokane WA

Retired in 7/02. Placed on leave in 11/02 after allegation that he molested a boy in 1966. Wetzler denied the charges and passed a polygraph. Investigation by the Church and a former Spokane police detective determined that Wetzler was innocent. Reportedly the boy had indeed been abused by a counselor but Wetzler had never acted as a counselor. Returned to active statusin 2/03. Placed on leave againin early 2014 during an investigation of accusations of past sexual abuse of another child. Per recommendation of the Diocesan Review Board, permanently removed in 10/14 and submitted to a monitoring program.

Placed on leave in 12/2007 and moved from his residence at Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, CA to Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, CA. Order investigated "an alleged recent incident of improper touching involving a 17-year-old boy while on a pastoral assignment" in White Salmon, WA. Often filled in along the western coast states for priests on vacation or leave. Included on the Jesuit West Province list 12/7/2018. Noted to be still living at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, on a safety plan. Died 12/10/2020.
