At least two claims included in settlement with diocese in 2005. (One news article spells his last name Alonzo.)

Fr. Romannilo Apura

Arrested 8/21/2014, charged with molesting a 16-year-old boy in a Trenton home in late spring or early summer. A second incident occurred in June, when Apura attempted to remove the same boy's pants. Suspended without privileges during investigation. Had been assigned to St. Martha's in Point Pleasant since July 2012. Prior to that was at St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral in Trenton June 2007-July 2012. The Diocese said this was the only complaint it had received regarding Apura. Pleaded guilty in 8/2015 to aggravated criminal sexual contact. Sentenced 11/20/2015 to three years in prison, ordered to register as sex offender, and lifetime parole. Time to be served at a specialized adult treatment center for sex offenders. Mental health evaluation found Apura to have "repetitive and compulsive behavior." Released 11/30/2017. Included on the diocese's list 2/13/2019. Removed from ministry. Per the list in 2021, Apura was laicized.

He had been incardinated into the Belleville Diocese in 1985. On 1/24/2009 the Belleville diocesan website gave his status as "Administrative Leave/Retired." Died 9/10/2012. On the Belleville diocese's list of credibly accused 12/19/2018. Included in the 5/23/2023 IL Attorney General's Report.

Removed from ministry in 2000. Convicted in 2002 on charges of molesting an 11-year-old boy in 1993. Sentenced to 15 years. At least nine other alleged victims, abused as young as age six. Additional criminal charges were filed in 9/2006 alleging abuse of a boy 1994-1995. Pleaded not guilty in 11/2006. Convicted in 2008. Diagnosed as a  "repetitive and compulsive sexual offender." Sentenced in 9/2008 to an additional 18 years. Died 2/29/2016 at the New Jersey Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Woodbridge NJ. On the diocese's list 2/13/2019. Included on the Baltimore archdiocese's list, which notes sexual abuse alleged in 2002 by Banko in the early 1970s while a seminarian at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. Included in the 4/5/2023 MD Attorney General's report.

Accused in a RICO lawsuit filed in 1994 of abusing a boy for 5 years, beginning 1972. The suit settled in 2003.  Bernard left parish ministry in 1977 for military chaplaincy. He retired in 1992 and was permanently removed from ministry. On diocese's list 2/13/2019. Sued 12/2019, accused, along with Revs. Jay Shannon and John Kelly, of abuse of a boy, age 12, in 1974.

The alleged victim first told the diocese in 10/2002. Bohrer was suspended at the time, then returned to ministry in 2009 after the diocese and Vatican reviewed the case. Name included on the Camden diocese's list 2/13/2019. Included on the Santa Fe archdiocese's list 5/19/2021, where he was assigned 1985-1986 to a Springer parish.

Per suit, Brennan sent the boy on missions to have sex with other students and report back; plied with porn; masturbated in boy's presence. Settlement 6/18 with 5 men alleging abuse at Delbarton School. Settlements also 12/18 and 2/19. Brennan admitted to abuse of about 50 boys. Active suits 2/19 from 3 men and 1 woman, claiming abuse at St. Elizabeth's. Died 12/4/19, age 79. Named in a 7/20 lawsuit filed under the NJ Child Sexual Abuse Act. Four more suits in 10/20. More in 12/20. Subject of 21 suits under the new Act by 11/21.

Named publicly as accused by the Trenton diocese on its list 2/13/2019. Multiple alleged victims noted. Died in 2013. One accuser stated publicly in 6/2019 that when he was a 16-year-old seminary student and parishioner at St. Mary of the Lake in Lakewood, Brown abused and attempted to rape him. In a 12/2019 lawsuit a man alleged Brown abused him at age 15. He said church officials called him a liar at the time, and that they covered up multiple cases involving the priest. Brown died in 6/2013.

Seminarian Marcin Burek

From Poland. Arrested in 10/2011 after driving down streets and trying to lure at least four girls, ages 13-19, into his car by offering them alcohol and offering to pay them $10 for sex. Per the Diocese, Burek was studying on a student visa to gain "parish ministry experience and to further discern his vocation." He was attending St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, MD and had just begun a pastoral year at St. Catherine Laboure in Middletown NJ. He denied the allegations. Removed from parish setting and no longer attending seminary.


Fr. Michael J. Burns

Accused publicly in 3/2004 of sexually abusing a girl when she was a sixth grader in 1975. Her complaint was originally made in 2002; the Diocese investigated, found no proof and allowed Burns to continue in active ministry. She filed suit in 2004. Burns retired in good standing in 2017.

Carmel Church in Cedar Knolls, NJ when the suit was announced. St. Mary's Abbey reported in 2012 that he is was under restrictions and being monitored. Settlement in 6/18 with five men alleging abuse at Delbarton School. Named in 7/20 lawsuit(s) filed under the NJ Child Sexual Abuse Act.

Fr. John M. Capparelli

Accused in 7/11 suit of abuse of a youth. Allegedly had boys wrestle in skimpy bathing suits and photographed them. Sold videos on web. Accused of groping plaintiff. Suit names Scouts and Diocese. Left active priesthood in mid-1980s. Privileges removed 1992; sent to treatment. Taught high school in Newark public schools for 20 years. At least 24 other men came forward with same complaints. Given non-teaching job 11/11. Another suit 12/11. Both settled in 2012. Surrendered public schools teaching license in 6/13. Laicized, possibly in 3/14. His appearance at an annual Family Festival at Our Lady of the Valley parish resulted in suspension without privileges by Paterson bishop of the pastor, Chris Di Lella, a long-time friend. On Newark archdiocese's list 2/13/19. Died 3/6/19 of gunshot wound at his home in NV. Homicide investigation initiated. Reportedly had a history of hiring male prostitutes. Alleged shooter had answered Capparelli's add for male wrestlers. New suit(s) in 7/20 claim abuse in the 1980s. By 11/21 accused in 20 lawsuits.

Native of Ireland. Placed on leave 2002 after accusation that he abused a former parishioner, her son and daughter in 1978 at parish in Old Bridge. Other accusations also made. Included in 1/03 settlement claiming abuse by 5 priests. He denied all allegations. In 3/09 church trial found him guilty of 1 count of abuse 1980-83; permanently removed from public ministry. On 7/27/14, diocese announced that that Appeals Court had found him guilty of "ongoing sexual abuse" of two minor children in the early 1980s. Dismissed from the priesthood, per 7/21/14 letter from Bishop. On diocese's list 2/13/19.

Had been living in a rectory after Hurricane Sandy with permission from the Archdiocese until public pressure forced his removal in 2/2013. On Archdiocese's list 2/13/2019. Multiple allegations noted. Permanently removed from ministry. Accused in a 12/2019 suit of abusing a boy, age 13 or 14, at Christ the King in Hillside 1983-1984.

Br. John B. Chaney

Listed on 6/11/14 by the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers (CFC) as accused by at least two persons in claims settled in bankruptcy proceedings. The order states that the merits of most of the claims settled in the bankruptcy were not tested. Chaney was added to a list of accused on the website of Boston attorney Garabedian on 10/31/14 after a settlement had been reached in the year previous. Assignments included Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell NJ, where the abuse alleged in the Garabedian case is said to have been committed. The 2014 Official Catholic Directory shows Chaney living at a Christian Brothers residence in West Park, in the NY archdiocese. Convicted abuser Bro Ronald Justin Lasik CFC and accused Bro John Laurence Heathwood CFC are also listed as residing there. Lawsuits in 3/21 by three former students allege abuse in the 1960s and '70s. Living in 3/21 in a CFC residence in New Rochelle.

Also known as Rev. V.J. Christudas. From India. Visiting priest at Church of the Visitation in Brick from 2001. Arrested 7/14/2012 and charged with criminal sexual contact of both an adult woman, her 5-year-old daughter, and her 13-year-old son. The woman complained to police on 7/13/2012 after the priest paid a visit to her home. Detectives found probable cause to file charges. Privileges removed by diocese. The woman filed civil suit 7/3/2014 on behalf of herself and her two children. Acquitted at criminal trial in 10/2014 of child molestation, found guilty of groping the woman. Sentenced to two years probation.

Br. Robert Coakley

A/k/a Br. Edmund. Scoutmaster and teacher. Accused of abuse of of two brothers, one of whom died by suicide at age 12. Coakley died in 1988. Civil suit filed and appealed to NJ Supreme Court. Dismissed because of NJ Charitable Immunity Act. Coakley's name appeared in the Boy Scout Perversion files released in 2012.

Fr. Raymond L. Cole

Pastor of St. Joseph's in Hillsborough, NJ. Removal from active ministry announced 10/25/13 after allegation of abuse of a minor in late the 1970s, when he was associate pastor at St. Mary's in South Amboy. County prosecutor informed the diocese; no criminal charges due to statute of limitations. Review Board and retired investigator found allegation "not frivolous." Cole denied the allegation. Matter referred to Vatican. In 11/15 Cole was found not guilty by a church tribunal, composed of three priests from outside the diocese. Cole was planning to go to Guatemala to study Spanish, then return to the diocese to do Hispanic ministry.

Arrested in Camden in 1984 for abuse of a boy, age 14. Admission. Placed in special court program under which his arrest was expunged after one year if no more problems. Spent eight months in treatment. Transferred to Pittsburgh in 1985, then to Philadelphia 1988-1993. His 1984 victim received a settlement the same year. Returned to Camden in restricted ministry. Removed in 2002. Named in the Philadelphia Grand Jury report 2/10/2011. Settlement related to alleged abuse of a 12- to 14-year-old boy, 1985-1988 in the Pittsburgh PA diocese. Named in the 8/14/2018 PA Grand Jury Report. On Camden diocese's list 2/13/2019. Per the updated list in 9/22, Connor is deceased.

Per the PA Attorney General's 3/1/16 report, Crouse sodomized a 14-year-old boy in the late 1960s while assigned to his order's monastery (Sons of the Sacred Heart, or "Verona Fathers") in Montclair, NJ. Victim told Altoona's Bishop Adamec in 2002. (Crouse was assigned to Altoona-Johnstown diocese at the time.) Alleged a "Fr Ben" also molested him, and both gave him alcohol. Crouse admitted "inappropriate relationship." Medical retirement 2002. Died 07/11/09.

Fr. Michael H. D’Amico

Accused in 2005 of abuse of a 13-year-old boy in 1964 at Most Holy Redeemer in Westville Grove. (This was D'Amico's first assignment.) Placed on leave in 5/2005. Permanently removed in 10/2005. Died in 6/2010 at age 71. On the diocese's list 2/13/2019.

Left the order in 2002. Worked for 15 years at Keiser U. in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Included on the Xaverians' list 7/12/2019. Died in 3/2020. Lawsuit filed in 7/2020. Accused in a new suit filed in 10/2021.

Fr. Glenn Michael Davidowich

Member of the Passaic Eparchy of the Byzantine Catholic Church. Identified in 2002 as founder of a website featuring videos of teenage boys wrestling in speedo swimsuits. Eparchy did nothing. Placed on leave in 2011 when a man accused Davidowich of abusing him as a boy at St. Mary the Assumption in Trenton in the late 1980s-early 1990s, beginning when the man was 15. The Eparchy paid the alleged victim $200K in 6/2011 to settle claims before suit filed. Living in WI in 2011. Another settlement 6/29/2013. Laicized 4/2/2013.

Fr. Charles J. Davis

Army reserve chaplain 1967-1970; on leave for a year; Camden parishes 1971-1974; Army chaplain 1974-1992; Camden parish for a year. On duty outside the diocese 1992-1999 in FL and NH, then retired. Camden asked Vatican to defrock Davis; matter was sent back to Camden for church tribunal. Included on the diocese's list of accused 2/13/19.

Fr. Hadmels R. DeFrias

Their mother walked in on an incident and complained to church officials. Removed from the parish and active priesthood. Arrested in 2003; living in MD at the time. Pled guilty. Sentenced to three years probation and barred from contact with minors in NJ. On the archdiocese's list 2/13/19. Permanently removed from ministry. Laicized. Lived in FL 2003-2010. Found in 3/19 to be teaching children at a private school in the Dominican Republic. Presenting himself as "Father Rafael" as part of an interfaith group called "The Order of Eremitic Servants."

Fr. Francis X. Dennehy

Vatican said he was too old for a church trial. Barred from publicly working as a priest as of 1/04. Died 11/17/10. On the diocese's list 2/13/19. (Name spelled Derricks)

Dicks was a chaplain at St. Francis Hospital in Trenton where the girl received treatment, and the abuse occurred in her hospital room. A claim in the case was settled in 5/2020 in the low six figures. Dicks died 10/4/2009.

Bishop Nicholas A. DiMarzio

Named Auxiliary Bishop of Newark in 1996, Bishop of Camden in 1999, and Bishop of Brooklyn in 2003. In 11/19 the Newark archdiocese was notified of an allegation that DiMarzio sexually abused a St. Nicholas in Jersey City altar boy, age 11, in the mid-1970s. His alleged victim also accused Rev. Albert Mark. The man filed suit in 3/21. DiMarzio "emphatically denied" the allegation. In 1/20 the Vatican ordered Cardinal Dolan to investigate. In 3/20 a second man came forward, alleging DiMarzio repeatedly sexually abused him when he was about age six, forty years prior, at Holy Rosary in Jersey City. DiMarzio denied the allegation. This man filed suit in 2/21. On 9/1/21 the Vatican announced that the allegations were without "the semblance of truth." DiMarzio retired several weeks later, at age 77.

Accused of abusing a boy at an unspecified date. Claims against him were included in a 1/03 settlement between the diocese and victims of 5 priests. The diocese reportedly said three people had come forward with claims against Dolak. Went on to work as an acute care family support specialist at Monmouth Medical Center. No longer there in 2/19. Acquitted; Vatican did not confirm the verdict until 2007. Returned to ministry as of 7/01/07. Returned to job as chaplain for NY Giants, but not to parish ministry. Lawsuit filed in 12/19 by one of the two who came forward in 2002, claiming abuse for five years, beginning in 1967 when he was age 12. Settled. Accused in suit filed in 11/20 of raping a girl, age 10, in 1971, and abusing her until 1975. Per the suit, two nuns held the girl down during the rape. Dowd denied it.

"Manus." Accused in a 5/21 lawsuit, along with Rev. Bruno Ugliano and Bro. Jonathan Michael Hunt, of sexually abusing a Delbarton School student, ages 13-14, over 150 times 1977-78. Duffy would allegedly follow the boy into the bathroom then molest him, and sodomized him on an overnight class trip to the Jersey Shore. The priest allegedly told the boy "This is how God wants me to show you love." Teacher, among other roles, including assistant headmaster, at Delbarton 1967-87. Left the priesthood and married in 1989. Died 12/30/08.

In 11/13, Bishop told parishioners at St. James the Less that Duggan had been accused of sexually abusing a developmentally-challenged adult in the early 1990s at St. James Parish in Woodbridge. Initially removed in 4/13 when Diocese first learned of the allegation. Later sent to Guest House in MN for treatment of alcoholism. Adamantly denied allegations. Review Board found accuser to be credible. Privileges removed. Died 7/6/17. Lawsuit filed on behalf of the victim in 6/19. The diocese offered a settlement in 7/20.

On archdiocese's list 2/13/19. Multiple alleged victims noted. Permanently removed from ministry. A lawsuit filed by a man in 11/21 claims Eilert abused him in 1978. 


Fr. Jean-Level Eliscard

Convicted in 1995; received a three-year probated sentence. Returned to Haiti. In 2003 he was working in a Canadian diocese. Prior to offense, he had worked in the Diocese of Brooklyn and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Fr. Eugene Fanelli

Assigned to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Jersey City until 1953, then Madonna Della Libera (Our Lady of Libera) in West New York until his retirement in 1993. Elevated to monsignor in 1989. Active in retirement at parishes in Mount Carmel, Jersey City, Fort Lee, Newark, West Long Branch. Directed musical theater at parishes. Died 5/9/00. Accused in several lawsuits filed in 2019, 2020 and 2021 of abuse while assigned to Holy Redeemer/Our Lady of Libera, 1975-77. By 11/21 at least four people had claimed abuse by Fanelli as children. One man first told his mother in 2018, who then revealed that his father, who had died by suicide, had also been sexually abused as a child by Fanelli.

Fr. George A. Farrell

Prior to 1996 ordination, Farrell was a Brother of Charity for 12 years. Placed on leave in 5/03 and sent to a "supervised living facility" after he was accused of an "isolated incident" of "inappropriate communication" over the Internet with a minor in 1997. Police and Division of Youth and Family Services investigated. No criminal charges filed. Returned to ministry in 10/04. Still active as of 3/13 at St. Joseph in North Plainfield, NJ.

Br. Malachy Flavin

Per Order, Flavin left active status in 1987 after he was found drinking with another boy. When Flavin would not voluntarily leave the Order, in 2003 it asked the Vatican for laicization. Named in lawsuit(s) filed in 7/20 under the NJ Child Sexual Abuse Victims Act.

Fr. Francis J. Flemming

Accused of abusing a boy, age 12, beginning in 1960. His accuser said two other priests also abused him. Further, he said that when he was age 16 Flemming put a gun to his head and threatened to kill him if he told. Flemming denied the allegations when confronted by the church in the 1960s. In a 1994 RICO civil suit a second man claimed Flemming abused him at age 14. One suit was dismissed in 1/2003 because of the accuser's credibility. Both accusers were among 23 plaintiffs included in a 3/2003 $880K settlement. Flemming died in 1986. Name included on the diocese's list 2/13/2019.

Br. Thomas Cuthbert Ford

Irish and U.S. citizen. Accused of beating and sexually abusing five boys at Mount Cashel orphanage in Newfoundland 1956-59. Worked as Dean at Damien Memorial School in HI 1972-75. Taught at Bergen Catholic in Newark archdiocese 1986-96. Indicted in Canada in 1996. In 2000 he agreed to return to Canada. Charges reduced. He pled guilty to brutally beating one of the boys in a shower and was sentenced to five months in jail in 8/00. Died 12/24/08. Named in a civil suit 4/4/14 as having abused one boy at Damien Memorial in about 1970. Listed by the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers in 2014 as accused by at least two persons in claims settled in bankruptcy proceedings.

Per St. Mary's Abbey the complaints "are not new." In 2012 the plaintiffs' attorney filed one lawsuit putting all claimants in multi-plaintiff complaint. It was dismissed. Named in 7/20 lawsuit(s) filed under the NJ Child Sexual Abuse Act. Reportedly in 7/20 "believed to be dead." New suit in 12/20.

Fr. George D. Gillen

Named in a case settled in 8/2008 as having sexually abused a boy who had been sent to him for counseling, beginning when the boy was age 12 in about 1988, and continuing into the boy's adulthood. As pastor of St. Joseph the Carpenter in Roselle, Gillen hired his alleged victim to lead youth activities. The alleged victim, John Schulte, was arrested in 11/2002 and convicted for the sexual assault of three boys in the parish. Gillen remained in active ministry.

Given lifetime parole, ordered to register as sex offender. Conviction overturned on appeal 2006. Signed agreement never to work unsupervised with children and to go to sex offender therapy. Back in ministry by 2009 as hospital chaplain and in parishes. Given chancery work. In 4/13 was found to be helping with overnight teen retreats in a parish. Parents upset. Resigned from active ministry 5/2/13. As part of criminal case against him for contempt of court based on recent behavior, agreed 11/1/13 to voluntarily seek laicization. Laicization announced 3/17/14. On archdiocese's list 2/13/19.

Charges of abuse of seven others dropped. Died in 2000. Per obituary he had been "serving at the Service of the Paraclete, a home for retired priests in Jemez Springs, New Mexico." It was actually a treatment facility for pedophile priests. On Newark archdiocese's list 2/13/19. Three claims settled in 2020 in the six figures.

Fr. Manuel Gallo Espinoza

St. Mary's, Plainfield NJ visiting priest from Ecuador. In 4/03 a 15-year-old male St. Mary's youth group member told his priest-cousin and a youth group leader Gallo Espinoza raped him in a parish rectory bedroom. Reported less than two weeks later by Catholic Charities to prosecutor's office. Gallo Espinoza old by Archdiocese he could no longer minister; fled to Ecuador. Investigation closed. In 2010 the boy, then a young adult, filed police report. The AD Review Board deemed the allegation credible and recommended laicization. In 2005 Gallo Espinoza returned to the US and taught in a middle school and a high school in MD and VA. Abruptly fled in 2/14. In 7/15 his whereabouts were unknown. Criminal investigation re-opened. Found in 8/15 to be in Ecuador. Admitted to a "sexual encounter" with the boy. Victim filed criminal complaint and arrest warrant issued 1/16. Indicted in 5/16. Still at large at the time. On archdiocese's list 2/13/19. Permanently removed from ministry. Died by suicide in Ecuador 7/2/22 after shooting three people, killing one.

Fr. Thomas P. Ganley

Charged in 1/2019 with sexual assault of a girl, ages 14-17, in 1990-1994 while assigned to St. Cecilia's in Woodbridge. The girl was involved in the parish CCD program. In a secret recording and to investigators, Ganley admitted to the "sexual conduct." The abuse occurred in NJ, FL and Washington DC. Pleaded guilty to the sexual assault of a minor under age 16 in exchange for a sentence of four years in state prison. Required to register as a sex offender. On the diocese's list 2/13/2019. Accused in a 12/2019 lawsuit of abusing a teenage boy, along with Rev. Robert Witkowski, at a parish in Iselin in the early 1990s. The plaintiff claimed the priests also abused other boys.

Maria Michael Garner

Sister of Charity of St. Elizabeth in Morris Township, NJ. Accused in a lawsuit filed 11/24/20 of sexually abusing a girl in her office at Immaculate Conception School several times a week, beginning in 1969 when the girl was age 8. Garner was a teacher and administrator at the school. Also accused, along with Sr. Alice Bernadette, C.S., of taking the girl in 1971 to Rev. William Dowd, and restraining the girl while the priest raped her. Dowd denied the allegations. Garner died 12/17/14.

Worked his first two years of priesthood in Manchester, England prior to arrival in the U.S., due to complications of WWII. Worked in the Sacramento diocese and Newark archdiocese before Trenton. Accused by a woman of repeatedly molesting and stalking her for three years late 1950s-early 1960s, beginning when she was age 11 and Garry was assigned to St. Mark's in Sea Girt, NJ. Confession was allegedly used in the abuse, and included digital penetration. Stalking and abuse allegedly continued after reassignment. Retired in 1981. Died 12/11/1988. Settlement in 12/2019 in the low six figures in case of abuse of two girls, ages 12 and 9, beginning1960 and 1961.

Fr. A. Richard Gerbino

Named publicly as accused by the diocese on its list 2/2019. A 3/2019 lawsuit claimed sex abuse of a 16-year-old boy in 1962 at a Vineland parish. The boy said he immediately told another priest in the rectory, who drove him - in the middle of the night - to Bishop Damiano's residence in Camden. The bishop reportedly told the boy in response to his disclosure, "Never speak of this again." Gerbino was the subject of a 2017 settlement with the daughter of a young man who was allegedly abused in the 1960s by Gerbino. The man killed himself in front of his daughter, then age 7, in 1970. Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Vineland from 1961 until his resignation in 11/1980 for "health reasons."  Reportedly removed from ministry in 1985 for "mental health reasons." Died in 2007.

Archbishop Peter Leo Gerety

Hartford CT priest, Portland ME auxiliary bishop 1966-69, then bishop 1969-74. Newark archbishop 1974-86. Died 9/20/16, age 104. Accused in a 3/21 lawsuit of sexually abusing a girl, age 5, several times in 1976. His accuser said she and her mother lived nearby and that Gerety offered to babysit, then molested her in his Cathedral bedroom. She said Gerety told her not to tell because it would hurt her mother. Accused in a lawsuit filed 11/16/21 of sexually abusing a girl over 5 years, beginning when she was age 5 in 1984, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

Fr. William Giblin

Briefly assigned to parish in River Edge, then pastor of St. Joseph in East Orange 1989-00. Retired 7/00, lived and assisted at Holy Rosary in Edgewater until 2010. Arrested in Canada 7/02 with another priest in male prostitution sting allegedly involving minors. Placed on leave/retired by archdiocese. Charges against Giblin dropped 4/03 for lack of evidence; the other priest was convicted. Died 5/13/11. Former Seton Hall student filed suit, claiming abuse by Giblin and Rev. Robert Gibney in the 1960s. Suit ongoing in 10/17. On archdiocese's list 2/13/19.

Ordained for the Archdiocese of Newark NJ in 1950. Transferred to the Harrisburg PA in 1982.  Retired in 1989; returned to NJ. Allegation in 1992 to the Harrisburg diocese that Giella had abused a child beginning in 1983. Arrested in NJ in 7/1992, indicted for child molestation and child porn. Pled not guilty to sex assault of an 11-year-old girl. Family filed lawsuit. He died in 5/1993, before he could be tried; suit settled with the diocese for $900K. Other women called news outlets saying they had been abused as minors in NJ in the 1960s by Giella. A PA woman filed suit in 2001; that and two other claims settled later in 2001. In 7/2018 two sisters alleging abuse through the 1980s by Giella asked a court to lift a gag order that was part of prior settlements with their other sisters. Accused of abuse of 5 girls in their family, one beginning at age 18 months. Name included on the Harrisburg diocese's list released 8/1/2018. On Newark's list 2/13/2019. The five sisters filed suit in 12/2019. Settlement of a claim in the low-to-mid six figures in 7/2023 that Giella sexually abused a boy, age 11-13, during 1984-1986. The abuse allegedly occurred at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Enhaut PA, where Giella was assigned.

Arrested and charged in 1/1986 with two counts of sexual contact for abuse in 12/1986 of a 15-year-old boy and abuse in 12/1987 of a 17-year-old boy. Both incidents allegedly occurred at St. Isidore's rectory in Vineland NJ, where Gillespie was assigned. He was also a religion teacher at Sacred Heart High School. Allowed to enter a pre-trial rehabilitation program which would lead to the dropping of the charges. Went on to chaplaincies at Vianney Villa in Cherry Hill, West Jersey Hospital in Voorhees and St. Mary's Nursing Home and Manor in Cherry Hill. Died 12/31/1994. 


Fr. John C. Giordano

Giordano retired from St. Luke's Church in North Plainfield early in 5/07. He attributed his retirement to the pressures of running a parish and allegations of sexual misconduct. The diocese apparently investigated at the time and no action was taken. He denied all allegations and stated that the "allegations were handled properly according to both civil and canon law." On the diocese's list 2/13/19. It notes that he was removed.

Fr. Charles P. Granstrand

In 9/10 Granstrand announced during services at Our Lady of Mercy that the Bergen County prosecutor's office had investigated allegations against him of sexual abuse of young children, but that there would be no criminal charges. The father of one man in his 20s told reporters that Granstrand molested his son and another boy in 1996, and that his son spiraled into drugs and trouble. Granstrand denied the allegations. Per the Our Lady of Mercy website in 5/20, Granstrand was on staff as pastor emeritus.

Fr. Kevin A. Gugliotta

Suspended in 2003. Accused of abusing a boy, age 16, in the 1980s, when he was a Boy Scout leader prior to ordination. Later sued. Not charged due to SOL. Reinstated in 12/04 without restrictions, including as a youth group chaplain in Scotch Plains. Arrested in NJ 10/20/16 on child porn charges in PA, where he stayed in apt a few times per week. Uploaded from his computer 20 child porn files to internet chat rooms. Had been removed from Holy Spirit in Union NJ earlier in the month due to investigation; "fugitive from justice." At parish just a few weeks, after 8 years at St. Bartholomew in Scotch Plains. Nationally ranked poker player. Pled guilty in 3/17. Sentenced in 8/17 to 11 and 1/2 to 23 and 1/2 months in prison; to register as a sex offender; 5 years probation. Said he uploaded the porn to get back at God as he wasn't winning poker tournaments. On archdiocese's list 2/13/19. Permanently removed from ministry. Accused in a 3/09 suit of abuse of an 11-year-old Scotch Plains boy in 2004. Suit in 4/21 claims abuse of boy, age 9, in 2006.

Hanley admitted abusing Mark Serrano 1974-81 starting at age 9. Serrano went public 3/18/02. Serrano case was settled by diocese in 1987 for $350K with a confidentiality agreement. Request for laicization granted 2/7/03. One victim died by suicide in 2003. Diocese settled with 21 accusers in 2005. Served one year in jail on weapons charge. On diocese's list 2/13/19. Lawsuits filed in 12/19 by at least two new accusers. Died in 4/20.

The boy's cousin later filed a civil suit against the NY Archdiocese, Newark and and the order alleging abuse by several in the Order. Heustis died in 2/2005. Listed by the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers in 2014 as accused by at least two persons in claims settled in bankruptcy proceedings. Included in the 5/23/2023 IL Attorney General's Report, which notes at least two "reported survivors."

Br. Andrew Thomas Hewitt

Arrested 7/02 in male prostitution sting allegedly involving minors. Placed on leave by archdiocese. Pled guilty 2003. Sentenced to two years probation with no unsupervised contact with minors. Remained on leave as of 5/03. Apparently lived without restrictions at St. John Vianney Residence for Retired Priests in Rutherford, NJ for several years until his death 12/24/07. On archdiocese's list 2/13/19. Multiple victims noted. Suit filed in 1/20 by a man claiming Heyndricks abused him at age 14 in 1990, when he was an Our Lady of the Lake student and altar boy.

The boy was a student at St. Peter's in Pleasantville. Hicks' alleged victim came forward in at least 2003, when the diocese reportedly turned the claim over to prosecutors. Hicks is deceased.

Removed from ministry in 1995 after an accusation of abuse of a boy. In 1999 this accuser's younger brother also alleged abuse. Lawsuit in 1999 by younger brother settled for $625K in 2001. Arrested in 2003. Laicized in 2004. Convicted in 2005 of abuse of boy and sentenced to 8 years in prison as of 3/5/2005. On NJ sex offender registry 6/12/2011. In 2012 a man told the Pittsburgh diocese that Hopkins performed a "medical exam" on him when the man was a freshman at St. Fidelis Seminary High School. decades earlier. Named in 8/14/2018 PA Grand Jury Report. On Camden diocese's list 2/13/2019.

Accused in 1994 of abuse in 1970s of a 15-year-old boy in New Jersey. Admitted the abuse. A second victim came forward. Forced to step down as head of the Chicago-based Servites. Went to Africa for a few years. Hired 1997 by St. Paul University in Ottawa, ON, Canada. By 2002 he was still a priest and professor and vice dean of canon law at St. Paul's. St. Paul's said he took "medical leave for the treatment of severe depression" in 8/02 after allegation surfaced. Ottawa archbishop said Huels was leaving Servites and would seek laicization. In 9/18 he was still professor of canon law at Saint Paul's. He was removed from that position after publicity the same month.

Fr. Frank J. Iazetta

Named publicly as accused by the Trenton diocese on its list 2/13/2019. Multiple alleged victims noted. Per news in 6/2020, four lawsuits had been filed claiming sexual abuse of children in the 1970s; one suit alleged he touched and massaged a 7-year-old girl's vagina in 1975. A suit filed 7/10/2020 claims Iazetta groomed and abused a boy for 16 years, including while the boy was a student St. Joseph High School in Metuchen. Iazetta left the school after 1974. Transferred in 1986 to Tennessee. Included 11/4/2021 on the Diocese of Nashville's list, which notes that he was assigned to  parishes in Nashville and Tullahoma and that he resigned the priesthood in 1993. (Name misspelled Iazzetta.) He died 3/14/2007.

Fr. Edward A. Igle

Accused in a 1994 lawsuit of sexual assault and rape over three-year period in 1970s of a 14- to 17-year-old boy. Remained in ministry until permanently removed 2000. His accuser received a $7,000 settlement. Igle said he left the priesthood in May 2000 on a voluntary leave of absence; diocese said it was due to abuse. A second man accused Igle of sexually abusing him in the 1970s; received a settlement in the early 2000s. Diocese deemed all allegations credible. Igle denied them. In July 2015 he remained a licensed marriage and family therapist in NJ. Name included on the diocese's list 2/13/2019.

Fr. Vincent J. Inghilterra

Attorney Garabedian announced settlement 9/2013 on behalf of one individual who alleged abuse by Inghilterra during 1970s when he was chaplain at Trenton State Teachers College in NJ. This was first public naming of Inghilterra although Trenton officials found the allegations credible in 5/2013 and suspended him then. Military Chaplain, per the 1989 Official Catholic Directory. In 2012 he was leading pilgrimages to France, Fatima, Italy and Medjugorje. In 9/2016 the Diocese agreed to a 6-figure settlement witha  man claiming abuse by Inghilterra at age 16 in 1979. The man said that after an incident, another teen told him he was "now one of Fr. Vince's boys." Included on the Diocese's list of credibly accused 2/13/2019. Per the list in 6/2021, Inglhilterra was laicized.

In 2020 a man received a settlement from the Archdiocese through its IVCP, for claims that Kilcarr sexually abused him as a boy, ages 13-15, dozens of times in the rectory of St. Joseph's in West Orange in the 1960s. Accused in a press conference held by Attorney Mitchell Garabedian on 8/7/2019 of sexually abusing a second boy. Kilcarr moved to Seton Hall Prep in 1968, where he had close access to thousands of young boys for multiple decades. He died 6/22/2017.

Accused in a lawsuit filed 1/6/2021 of sexually abusing a girl, age 14, in summer 1974 at the Marianist Famiy Retreat Center in Cape May Point. The girl was a volunteer camp counselor. Koch reportedly remained active at the center into 2020. Removed. Koch's accuser also alleged abuse at the camp by Marianist Fr. John Sheehan.

Charged in 11/19 with sexual assault of a minor between ages 13-16. The abuse allegedly took place in Springfield, MA. Pled not guilty 12/12/19.

Allegedly sexually abused an altar boy, ages 13-16, 1983-1985, while assigned to St. Casimir in Riverside NJ. The abuse is said to have occurred in the parish rectory and in hotel rooms during trips. Kwapisz died 1/27/1988. Per his obituary, Kwapisz worked at Archbishop Curley High School in Baltimore MD for 10 years, then at parishes in PA, NJ and GA.

Fr. John J. Laferrera

In 2009 a man told the archdiocese that he had been abused by Laferrera and Fr. T. Smith. Accusation dismissed as not credible. At least 11 other accusers came forward. Civil suit filed in 3/11 by four; four others later joined. Pastor of Saint Philomena's in Livingston when suit filed. Removed in 7/11 when he took voluntary leave. Denied charges. Allowed to retire with benefits as of 6/6/12. Six plaintiffs settled in 6/12 for $300K; privileges removed. Claims of two more plaintiffs were to be mediated. On archdiocese's list 2/13/19, noting multiple alleged victims. Permanently removed from ministry. Accused in a 7/20 lawsuit of participating with Cardinal McCarrick and other priests in a sex ring involving children. Reportedly in 11/21 there were three recent suits, one claiming abuse by Laferrera of a boy, age 15, at a Livingston parish in 2008 and 2009.

Fr. Rene Cavalcanti de Lima

Former member of the Society of Divine Vocations (Vocationists), became diocesan priest in native Brazil. In 8/18 a man told the archdiocese that Lima sexually abused him when he was a 13-year-old altar boy in the late 1980s at Immaculate Conception, and Lima was a fill-in for the pastor. Lima was assigned at the time to St. Michael's. The man said the abuse occurred over a year in the church, Lima's bedroom and and a trip to FL. Lima's accuser said he was informed by Newark archdiocese spokesman, James Goodness, that it was the Vocationists who were responsible to investigate, not the archdiocese. He said Lima left the order 20 years prior and was a priest in the Diocese of Guarulhos, Brazil. Investigate in 2009 for "relationship" with a youth at a Cocaia church. Still in active ministry in Brazil in 5/19.

Fr. Gregory J. Littleton

Per Metuchen bishop, Littleton gave info to diocese in 1993 that implicated him in sexual abuse of 2 minors. Removed and sent for evaluation and 3 years' therapy. Allowed to return on limited basis; returned in 1997 to full time ministry. Transferred in 1997 to Charlotte diocese, which was told of his past. In 10/02 allegations were reported to Metuchen and passed to Charlotte. Not removed by Charlotte until 2/04 when allegations deemed credible. Per news in 8/18, Littleton claimed he was a victim of sexual misconduct by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. Littleton was included on the Metuchen diocese's list 2/13/19. On the Charlotte diocese's list 12/29/19.

Fr. Jose Lopez Durango

Removed without privileges. Arrested 7/13, charged with Luring a Child, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Criminal Sexual Contact. Released on bail. Br. Richard Edward Lott

Accused in a 2005 civil suit of sexually abusing a student at Delbarton School in 1977, and of plying the boy with alcohol and marijuana. Settled in 2006. The Order said it learned of accusations against Lott in 2004 and reported it to police. A 3/17 lawsuit claimed sexual abuse by Lott 1/1/76 of another Delbarton student. This accuser said he told Abbot Brian Clark of his abuse over a year after it occurred, and that Clark told the boy to keep it quiet and that Lott would be "reined in." The man learned years later that a second student was abused by Lott not long after he spoke with the Abbot.

Fr. Kenneth L. Martin

Martin later held prominent position in diocese, then returned to parish ministry. The same victim went to Archbishop McCarrick with allegations in 1996 or 1997. Victim and family got small settlement. Martin was removed, later assigned as a hospital chaplain. Removed in 2002. Still a priest in 2013, without privileges, working as a train conductor for NJ Transit. He successfully sued to keep personnel file from being released in bankruptcy. Fr. Terence O. McAlinden

The same man filed isuit n 2009 in DE. In 2011 a man said he reported abuse in 1989 and settled with the Diocese in 1992. Another man alleged abuse in the late 1960s. Suit still before the court in 6/2014. The Diocese claimed no responsibility for McAlinden's behavior because he was "off duty" at the time of abuse. It settled in 10/2014 with a man claiming abuse by McAlinden in the 1980s. Died 2/6/2015. On the Diocese's list 2/13/2019.

Fr. Peter McBride

Named publicly as accused by the diocese on its list 2/13/19. Multiple accusations noted. Removed from ministry 10/1/94. Indicted in 2/95 on charges of sexual harassment by offensive touching of two adult female parishioners, and of molesting a girl, age 14. McBride had admitted to exposing himself to and fondling the girl. Charges were dropped in the case of abuse of the girl, the judge saying that McBride was denied his right to an attorney. The girl filed a civil case in 2/96, which settled. Six other women also claimed molestation by McBride but no prosecution due to the statute of limitations. He pleaded guilty in 2/97 to improper touching of the two adult women, in 1991 and 1992. Sentenced in 4/97 to treatment and fined $250. Sent to St. Luke Institute in Silver Spring, MD. He was later allowed to work as a weekend assistant at a parish.

Two brothers went to the diocese in 1994 to complain of abuse as boys 1963-1968; they were rebuffed by Bishop McHugh. McIntyre was a seminary student at time of the alleged abuse. Another suit was dismissed in 1/2003 based on credibility of the plaintiff. McIntyre died in 8/2004. All RICO claims settled in 3/2003.

Named in a RICO pleading filed in New Jersey in 1994. A woman alleged that Millard, her uncle, sexually abused her beginning when she was age five in 1957 and continuing for 8 years. She said her sister, who died in 6/2020, was also abused by Millard. The sister's son acknowledged to a reporter that his mother told him Millard had sexually abused her. Other relatives were angry about the allegations by the woman against "Fr. Dan" and cut off contact with her. Millard died 5/27/1973 at age 50. The woman filed suit 2/4/2020 against the Camden diocese. Per the diocese, the allegations could not be deemed credible because there were no other complaints in Millard's personnel file and because of "statements from [his accuser's] relatives." The same woman alleges abuse by Sr. Eileen Shaw from the age of 15.

Br. Kurt Munn

Franciscan brother. Transferred to NJ from MI in 1972. Returned to DeWitt, MI around 1979. Accused publicly in 4/2019 of sexually abusing a boy 1972-1979 while assigned to Holy Assumption School in Roebling, NJ. Began raping the plaintiff when he was a 7-year-old altar boy. The plaintiff filed a report with the NJ State Police in 1996; Munn admitted to abusing the boy as well as over a dozen others, but the statute of limitations wouldn't allow prosecution. The diocese confirmed in 2019 that in 1998 and 2007 it received multiple allegations against Munn from his time at Holy Assumption. Munn left the Franciscans at some point. In 4/2019 he was still living in DeWitt, MI. Reportedly known in DeWitt as having been a firefighter and active with the Knights of Columbus. A civil lawsuit was filed in 12/2019 under a new NJ law by the man victimized as a boy 1972-1979. A second man filed suit in early 2020 alleging abuse in NJ beginning at age 10.

Per the woman, she was part of a group of up to eight children Nugent regularly abused in the 1970s. Another suit was settled in 2008, claiming abuse of a male Don Bosco Prep student 1977-1976. Named in a suit filed by four former junior seminary students. Died at age 89 on 1/20/2011 in Italy, where he had lived for many years. Included in 3/2020 on the Salesians list of credibly accused.


Fr. Marcin Nurek

Charged with criminal contact and endangering the welfare of a child after accused of groping a 13-year-old girl in Boonton. Allegedly followed group of girls as they walked down the street, then put his hand under the girl's skirt, touched her buttocks and said, "You're sexy." Placed on leave, faculties revoked. Released from custody to Bethlehem Hermitage for priests in Bethlehem Township after surrendering passport. Indicted 3/18. As of 5/18 was to spend 18 months supervised in Pretrial Intervention program. If successful, charges to be dismissed and record expunged. On diocese's list 2/13/19.

Fr. Laserian I. Nwoga

Still active priest with the Camden diocese in 1/2005. Served in Kuwait for several months as a military chaplain. As of 4/2007, he was stationed at Kadena Air Force Base, Japan. Fr. Charles P. O’Donoghue

A member of an Irish religious order, Charles O'Donoghue returned to Ireland in 1975 and is believed to have died in 1986.

Fr. Contardo Angelo Omarini

Per 4/18/13 news, a man stated in 2012 NJ SOL testimony that as a teenage boy he was repeatedly raped by Omarini, a Pauline Father, in the early- to mid-1960s. The boy was a parishioner at St. Bernard's church in Plainfield NJ, where Omarini said Mass in Italian on Sundays at least until 1977. The priest would travel from the Society of St. Paul's abbey and seminary on Staten Island in the NY archdiocese. He was assigned to the order's facility on Staten Island for his entire career, except for a two-year stint at St. Paul's Monastery in Canfield OH 1950-52. In Omarini's early years as a priest, the Society of St. Paul had a connection with nearby St. Rita's church on Staten Island. The complainant states that there were other victims and that Omarini abused in Plainville and also on Staten Island at the Society's abbey there. Omarini died 11/4/95. A lawsuit filed 7/13/20 claims abuse of three siblings at St. Bernard's in the late-1950s and early-1960s.

Fr. Peter J. Osinski

Arrested in 1997. Pleaded guilty in 1998 to the sexual assault of a boy for seven years in the 1980s, beginning when boy was age six. Sentenced to 10 years. The victim filed suit against Osinski, Bishop Rodimer and the diocese. Osinski and Rodimer shared a vacation home for over 20 years, where the boy was abused. Settled in 1999. Osinski may have been living in the Shenandoah, PA area as of 2009. On sex offender registry. Laicized in 2003. On the diocese's list 2/13/2019. Deceased.

In 12/10 testimony before NJ Senate Judiciary Committee a man said he was abused by Pecklers and then-deacon Thomas Stanford while a teenager in 1976 at St. Paul's in Jersey City. Pecklers was 17 or 18 himself at the beginning and was music director. Abuse went on for almost a year. Pecklers went on to be a Jesuit scholar on staff at Pontifical Gregorian University Rome. Plaintiff settled with diocese in 2008. When asked about allegation, Pecklers said there was no abuse because he was a minor himself at the time. Remained active priest as of 7/14. Included on the Northeast Jesuits list of credibly accused 1/15/19. It note report received in 2008 of abuse of a minor 1976-77, prior to entering the Jesuits. Ministry restricted in 2009.

Ordained for the Paterson diocese in 1961 (obit says 1960). Retired in 1977. Named publicly as accused by the diocese on its list 2/13/19. Multiple accusations noted. Died 2/21/04.

Fr. Joseph R. Punderson

Monsignor. Working at the Vatican since 1995 as Defender of the Bond at the Apostolic Signature. Named publicly as accused by the diocese on its list 2/13/2019. One alleged victim noted. Had been credibly accused in 2003 of sexually abusing a minor 23 years prior. The Holy See was informed, Punderson offered to resign, but he was allowed to continue in his role. In Fall 2018 the Trenton bishop instructed him to resign; this time his resignation was accepted. Removed from all public ministry.

Fr. Thomas G. Rainforth

Accused in 7/02 by a man of molestation in 1975. Placed on leave. Returned to ministry in 8/02 after diocese said Rainforth was drunk and behavior was inappropriate but did not meet definition of abuse. Sued in 2004 by another man. Claim included in 2/05 $5M settlement with 27 plaintiffs, most of whom were abused by Rev. James Hanley. Rainforth's accuser later died of a drug overdose. In a 12/19 suit Rainforth was accused of sexual abuse by another man, who also alleged abuse as a boy by Hanley. Rainforth is "recently" deceased, per the diocese in 12/19.

Fr. Joseph P. Rice

On archdiocese's list 2/13/19. Multiple alleged victims noted. Died in 2014. New suit in 7/20 alleges abuse 1978-81 at St. John the Apostle in Linden. Accused in a claim settled in 2020 in the low six figures of sexually abusing an altar boy, ages 12-18, during 1978-85, while assigned to St. John the Apostle. The abuse included forced oral sex and forced sodomy.

Fr. Matthew Riedlinger

Complaints to Bishop O'Connell in 2011 that Riedlinger engaged in explicit sexting, emails and verbal conversations with students in seminary. Bishop sent him to counseling and lectured him. Two men set up Internet sting in 2012 and the priest exchanged over 1200 explicit text messages and emails with what he thought was 16-year-old old boy. The men (supported by three others) gave transcripts of the exchanges to the bishop in 2012. Removed; sent to in-patient treatment. No publicity until 2013. Privileges permanently removed 10/2013.

Fr. Gerald P. Ruane

Salus taught religion at the school while assisting at area parishes on the weekends. He was later pastor for many years at Mt. Carmel in Cedar Knolls. In 11/21 he reportedly remained active at St. Mary's Abbey in Morristown, and as chaplain at Newton Medical Center and for the Filippini Sisters at Villa Walsh.


Fr. Michael P. Santillo

Left active priesthood in 1992 to care for his parents. Charged in 5/97 with molesting a 13-year-old boy in 1987. Working at time of arrest in non-priest role at church in the Albany, NY diocese. Convicted in 1999. Three additional known victims. Sentenced to ten years. Died of cancer in prison in 2000. Three claims included in 1/03 diocesan settlement involving abuse by five priests. Accused in a lawsuit in 12/20 of grooming then sexually abusing a boy during elementary and high school. Santillo allegedly began to ply the boy with alcohol then molest him when he was a teen in 1983, in the the rectory of St. Mary's in Perth Amboy and during a trip to Disney World.

Abuse allegedly occurred several times in Scott's car between 1969-1970 when accuser was 16. Scott's name last appears in the 1973 Official Catholic Directory, "on temporary leave." Diocese in 2012 said Scott was not an active priest. Other sources reported he was living in North Carolina.

Sella was still assigned to a parish in 2005 because "the diocese found no evidence of wrongdoing during an internal review." Died 11/4/18 in Puerto Rico, where he had been living in retirement. Per his obituary, Sella "resigned for health reasons and retired in 2008."

Sued 12/2019, accused of abuse in 1974 of boy, age 12. Plaintiff claimed abuse also by Revs. John Kelly and John Bernard. Two victims were brothers; accused in a suit pending in 12/2020 of raping their sister, age 13.

Sr. Eileen Shaw

Accused in 1994 of sexually abusing a girl, beginning in 1968 when the girl was age 15 and continuing until 1992. Shaw's alleged victim said that the nun plied her with drugs and alcohol. Order provided therapy and settled with the woman for $70K. Shaw was removed as principal of elementary school. In 2004 she was working as administrator of the Caritas Community in Jersey City, a retirement home for nuns. In 1/19 she reportedly was still with the Sisters of Charity and restricted from outside ministry. Shaw's accuser also alleges sexual abuse by her uncle, Fr. Daniel Millard, for 8 years beginning when she was age 5.

Accused in 1967 of sexually abusing a girl. beginning in 1965, when the girl was 12. Her parents met with the Order's mother superior, who at first didn't believe the accusation. Letters from Sr. Andre to the girl and the nun's journals confirmed the accusations. Sr. Andre had worked in two other dioceses before Newark and was transferred to CT in 1967. The church paid for the girl's counseling; she died by suicide in 1989.

Two men filed civil suit in 2005 alleging abuse by nuns at Sacred Heart Orphanage in NJ in early 1940s. One man said he was abused by Sister Regina. She and most of other nuns who served at the orphanage are deceased. In 1990 both plaintiffs were in their 80s. In 2009, Court denied a motion by Order on limitations, ruing that the lawsuit could proceed.

Legally changed his name to Gerald Howard. Incardinated into the Jefferson City MO diocese; assigned to a parish with a school. Reportedly had no clerical assignments since removal from active ministry in 1984. Accused in 2007 of abusing another boy. Claim settled in 2009 for $600K and agreement to laicize. Other victims in NJ and MO. Arrested in 4/10 in NJ and later in MO. Jailed until MO criminal trial. Settlement of five claims in 2013 for $650K. Pleaded guilty 6/17/14 to two counts of forcible sodomy and one count of attempted forcible sodomy against three teenage boys. Other counts dropped. To serve three concurrent twelve-year sentences and register as sa ex offender when released. Laicized 9/24/12, announced 6/18/14. On Jefferson City diocese's list 11/8/18. On Newark list 2/13/19. Died 9/19/21.

Fr. James A.D. Smith

Tribunal found him guilty of abuse of at least one and decided he should be permanently removed from ministry but not laicized. Smith said he would appeal. On diocese's list 2/13/19. It noted multiple allegations and that Smith died 1/27/15.

In 12/10 testimony before the NJ Senate Judiciary Committee, a man said he was abused by Stanford (also spelled Stamford), while a teenager in 1977 at St. Paul's in Jersey City. Stanford was a deacon at the time, prior to ordination to the priesthood. The man said he told Stanford about previous abuse by another teenager (later a Jesuit priest) and that Stanford used drugs and alcohol to abuse him for another three years. Plaintiff settled with the archdiocese in 2008. Stanford left the priesthood in the mid-1980s. He worked as lay employee for the Paterson Diocese until fired after the settlement. On Newark archdiocese's list 2/13/19. Multiple alleged victims noted. Permanently removed from ministry.

Fr. Brendan V. Sullivan

Accused by a 29-year-old man in a 5/2019 lawsuit of sexually abusing him almost daily as a boy 1996-2001 at St. James in Ventnor, beginning when he was age 7. The suit claims other boys were victimized as well. On diocese's list 2/13/2019.

Fr. Luke Travers

One said Travers grabbed his crotch and butt. The other said Travers "crossed boundaries" both while he was a student and later. Removed from current position at Mary Mother of the Church Abbey in VA. Three other accusers came forward. Suit filed 3/20/12. Living under restrictions at Abbey until he severed ties with it in 4/12. Settlement in 6/18 with five men alleging abuse at Delbarton School. New suits in 12/20.

Fr. Ronald J. Tully

Ordained for the Augustinians. Taught in DC the 1960s. Left Order in 1970. Became a Paterson diocesan priest. Charged in 1979 in NY after two boys, ages 14 and 15, alleged sex abuse by Tully. Charges dismissed in 1980. Both came forward in 2004 after learning he had been assigned to a parish since 1983. They said a church official threatened families in 1979 to keep them quiet. Permanent leave in 2004. A third claim settled in 1/2007. Two more claims settled as of 4/2008. Another in 12/2008. Settlement in 3/2012 for $265K. In 9/2015 the Paterson diocese settled for "six figures" with a woman claiming Tully fondled her over 20 times in 1977 when he was Pope Piux XII High School vice-principal and she was student, age 16. Total of $2.1M in settlements with at least nine alleged Tully victims, abused at ages 8-16. Laicized in 2004. Abuse reported in 2011 to the Archdiocese of Washington DC. Laicized 1/22/2016. On WDC list 10/15/2018. Died 11/29/2018. On the Paterson diocese's list 2/13/2019.

Fr. Florencio Peneda Tumang

In a 1993 civil suit, four families alleged their daughters were abused by Tumang between 1987 and 1992. Parents of one of them allegedly told diocesan officials in 1990, but no action was taken. Tumang later assaulted the fourth girl, who was age 14. Tumang was indicted twice in 1992 but fled, possibly to the Philippines. Warrants were out for his arrest. Included on the diocese's list of credibly accused 2/13/2019. Per the list, Tumang was ordained in 1980, but the Official Catholic Directories show his ordination as 1948. Deceased.

Fr. Bruno Ugliano

In 7/02 a woman told the diocese in 10/01 that Ugliano sexually abused her at age 14 in the early 1980s, while assigned to a Linden parish. She also accused Revs. Edward Eilert and Joseph Rice. Ugliano was temporarily suspended. Law enforcement deemed the allegations not credible. (She received a settlement in a suit regarding the two other priests.) Ugliano was accused in a 5/21 lawsuit, along with Rev. Manus Duffy and Bro. Jonathan Michael Hunt, of sexually abusing a Delbarton School student, ages 13-14, 1977-78. Ugliano was assistant Delbarton headmaster 1975-78 and headmaster 1985-90. He died 11/17/14.


Fr. Julian B. Varettoni

Monsignor. Accused by Bob Deacon in 2004 of abusing him as a boy in the 1960s. Diocesan investigation found insufficient information to determine guilt, though the board found Deacon's testimony credible, per his canon lawyer, Rev. Kenneth Lasch. Deacon appealed to the Vatican. In 2/05 the Paterson diocese settled with Deacon and other victims for $5M. Bishop Serratelli informed Lasch that "the Vatican upheld [Serratelli's] decision to exonerate Varettoni," who continued as pastor of Sacred Heart in Clifton. Retired in 2007.

Fr. Gregory D. Vaughan

Monsignor. Parish priest, former vicar for Catholic education, chancellor, vicar general, moderator of the curia, director of vocations. In 3/2019, the diocese announced it had received a credible allegation against Vaughan of child sexual abuse, occurring in the late 1970s-early 1980s, while he was assigned to St. Ann's in Keansburg. Removed from ministry. In 4/2019 the diocese quietly updated its list, noting that there were multiple victims. Case reported to law enforcement, and to be sent to the Vatican. Per news in 6/2020, Vaughan was accused in a lawsuit of sexually abusing an altar boy, age 8, on multiple occasions in 1987. The abuse included anal penetration and forced oral copulation.

In 6/2004 a man reported to the Manchester NH diocese that Walsh fondled then masturbated him for 3-4 months between 1987-1988. Walsh was assigned to St. Thomas Aquinas in Derry at the time. Walsh denied these allegations.

Fr. Michael Walters

"Mitch." Allegations to archdiocese in 8/15 that Walters abused a boy and a girl in the early 1980s while assigned to St. Cassian in Montclair. Not suspended until 10/15. One accuser said Walters fondled and kissed him repeatedly as a 12-year-old altar boy in 1982; the other claimed Walters molested her at ages 13-14. Walters denied the accusations. Another woman publicly accused Walters of molesting her twice when she was age 13. Criminal investigation underway 7/16 of allegations he sexually abused a boy in the 1990s at St. John Nepomuce in Guttenberg. This accuser filed suit 8/17/16. His attorney said he was representing six Walters victims allegedly abused 1982-94, ages 8-14. Two more suits filed 10/16. Judge in 10/17 found probable cause to file charges. Five cases settled in 1/19. On archdiocese's list 2/13/19. Permanently removed from ministry. Accused in a 7/20 lawsuit of participating with Cardinal McCarrick and other priests in a sex ring involving children.

Weaver was a spiritual adviser to Bishop Guilfoyle. First allegation received in 1966. No action. Promoted and transferred. Arrested in 1985 and 1986, charged with sex crimes. Convicted; placed on probation. Abused at least six boys. Named in 1994 RICO lawsuit. Permanently suspended. All RICO claims settled 3/2003. Died 5/21/2011. On diocese's list 2/13/2019. Accused in a lawsuit filed in 12/2019 of abuse of a boy, ages 8-13, in 1974-1978.

Named publicly as accused by the diocese on its list 2/13/2019. Multiple allegations noted. Removed from ministry. Arrested in 9/2019, charged with sexually assaulting a girl under age 13 on three occasions 1997-1999. The alleged victim said that she was 12 when Williams touched her on her inner thigh and vaginal area. After news of his arrest, two more women came forward, one alleging that when she was age 12 in 1983, Williams kissed her repeatedly and patted her bottom; the other said that when she was 13 in 1983, he took her to an office to show her something, seemed to attempt to kiss her but she got up and left before he could. Both said the incidents occurred at St. Veronica's in Howell, and they were students at the parish school. Per the Trenton diocese's list updated in 6/2021, Williams was laicized. Acquitted by a judge in 7/2021. Williams reportedly said he planned to move to his native Ireland.

Pleaded guilty in 2/06 to beating his wife and to abusing a then 11-year-old  boy at ages 4-7.  Said he couldn't refute the boy's claim that he touched him sexually.  Sentenced to jail for 180 days in 5/06. Laicized in 8/07.

Accused publicly in 10/20 by a 45-year-old man of sexually abusing him as a child for years, beginning at age 7. The alleged victim said that he was also abused by Rev. Kenneth L. Martin, who had promised to protect him from Wojtycha. Instead, both priests allegedly abuse him at St. Andrew's parish in Bayonne, at hotels, and at a Jersey Shore house. The abuse is said to have included beatings, psychological torture and sodomy. Parish priest at St. Vincent de Paul in Bayonne 1938-63, pastor of Our Lady of Mercy in Jersey City 1963-70, and St. Andrew's in Bayonne 1970-85. Elevated to Monsignor in 1983. Auxiliary Naval chaplain. Held chancery positions and received numerous honors. Lead a drum and bugle corp 1940s-60s. Retired in 1985 to the Palm Beach FL diocese. Died 6/8/09.

Initially was"Bro. Michael" with Brothers of the Holy Rosary (F.S.R.). Worked in Reno diocese; taught at Manogue High School 1974-78, directed CYO program. Ordained a Benedictine priest in 1987. Taught at Delbarton School in NJ for 18 years. In 6/12 a man joined in an existing suit against Delbarton School to allege abuse in 1980s by Worry. A 2015 lawsuit settled. Worry had been removed from assignment in 1/12 and sent to St. Mary's Abbey after allegation of misconduct in the 1990s. Said to be under strict supervision. Accused in a lawsuit against the Delbarton School filed in 7/20 under the NJ Child Sexual Abuse Act of abusing a 15-year-old boy 1978-79. Reportedly still living on campus in 7/20.

Permanently removed from ministry in 2002 due to allegation of abuse of a youth in the early 1970s in Newark. Died in 3/08 at age 67. Name included on the St. Paul and Minneapolis archdiocese's list of credibly accused in 12/13. On Newark archdiocese's list 2/13/19.

Director and chaplain of Princeton University's Catholic campus ministry and Diocesan Vicar for Catholic Education in 9/2019 when accused of sexually abusing a minor in 1975, prior to ordination. Denied the allegation. Resigned. On 6/16/2020 the TOR Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus announced that investigations by the Attorney General and Order could not substantiate the allegation and deemed it not credible. Zeis was to be reinstated.

From Poland. Had been working at Christ King Church in Manville since 4/08. In 7/08 a teenage girl complained to flight attendants that he was groping her and attempting to unzip her pants during a flight from Poland to the US. Zielinski was criminally charged about one week later. Placed on leave by the diocese. Pleaded guilty 10/1/08. Sentenced to one year in federal prison in 1/09. Released in 1/10.
